{"id":293297,"date":"2026-09-24T21:48:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T21:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/293297\/"},"modified":"2026-09-24T21:48:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T21:48:08","slug":"pennsylvania-to-get-part-of-2-2m-settlement-in-data-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/293297\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania to Get Part of $2.2M Settlement in Data Breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                                    (TNS) \u2014 Pennsylvania will receive more than $43,000 as part of a multistate settlement with the Laboratory Corporation of America over a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classaction.org\/quest-diagnostics-labcorp-data-breach-collections-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2019 data breach<\/a> that potentially exposed the personal information of more than 218,000 state residents.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Dave Sunday announced Thursday that Pennsylvania joined 44 other states in settling with Labcorp following an investigation into the breach at the company\u2019s debt collector, Retrieval-Masters Creditors Bureau, which does business as American Medical Collection Agency.<\/p>\n<p>The breach potentially exposed the personal information of 27.5 million people nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis settlement will provide necessary protections to minimize the chances of such sensitive medical data being accessed again by bad actors,\u201d Sunday said.<\/p>\n<p>Under the settlement terms, Labcorp will pay more than $2.28 million to participating states. The agreement requires the company and its associated debt collectors to strengthen protections and improve response and notification plans for patient information.<\/p>\n<p>While the breach occurred at AMCA, the compromised data belonged to Labcorp\u2019s patients. The settlement establishes that companies remain responsible for data security even when working with third-party vendors.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement imposes specific vendor management requirements on Labcorp. Labcorp must also hire a third-party assessor to evaluate its information security with a focus on vendor risk management.<\/p>\n<p>This settlement adds to a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/settlement-lawsuit-class-action-labcorp-amca-data-breach-12284498\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previous multistate settlement with AMCA<\/a> that included a $21 million payment suspended due to the company\u2019s bankruptcy.
