Erie police officers who on the evening of July 26 responded to an East 13th Street apartment to investigate a reported domestic disturbance said they found a woman under a blanket in an upstairs bedroom.<\/p>\n
The woman, who was bleeding from the mouth, muttered, “He tried to kill me,” an investigating officer wrote in the initial criminal complaint filed against her accused attacker.<\/p>\n
The woman’s words were prophetic.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the woman was taken to UPMC Hamot after the attack and was released on July 29. But she returned to the hospital Aug. 9.<\/p>\n
The woman, identified by authorities as 38-year-old Victoria Ogak, died the next day.<\/p>\n
The man accused of assaulting her is now charged with killing her.<\/p>\n
Sabri Y. Bol, 32, of Erie, was returned to the Erie County Prison without bond following his arraignment Sept. 22 on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and harassment. He had been in prison on $10,000 bond since his arraignment July 27 on misdemeanor simple assault and two summary charges that police filed against him a day after the attack.<\/p>\n
A lawyer for Bol in the homicide case was not listed on his criminal docket sheet Sept. 24.<\/p>\n
Ogak’s death is the fourth homicide case in Erie and the fifth in Erie County so far this year.<\/p>\n
What happened in the attack?<\/p>\n
Erie police accuse Bol of assaulting Ogak in a domestic disturbance that was reported July 26 at about 8:15 p.m. Officers who responded to the 600 block of East 13th Street said they encountered several men in the back of the residence, including Bol, who they said denied being involved in a domestic incident.<\/p>\n
Another man directed police to an upstairs bedroom, where officers found Ogak under a blanket and bleeding from the mouth. She was able to speak clearly but muttered, “He tried to kill me,” the investigating officer wrote in the criminal complaint’s affidavit of probable cause.<\/p>\n
Police learned from a witness that Ogak and Bol had been arguing, and when the witness reported seeing Bol punch Ogak in the face multiple times and kick her, according to information in the affidavit.<\/p>\n
When officers went back outside, Bol was gone and they were told he walked away. An officer then found Bol and he was taken into custody, the investigating officer wrote.<\/p>\n
Return to hospital and death<\/p>\n
The Erie police detectives who filed the homicide and related charges against Bol wrote in their complaint that medical staff at UPMC Hamot had determined Ogak was suffering from a subdural hemorrhage, a collection of blood between the brain’s surface and its outer protective covering, that was observed on a CT scan done at the hospital July 26. She was discharged from the hospital July 29, according to one of the detectives.<\/p>\n
Ogak was taken back to UPMC Hamot Aug. 9 for further treatment, and a CT scan showed the subdural hemorrhage grew significantly in size and caused a midline shift of the brain. She was diagnosed with a “devastating non-survivable brain injury,” detectives wrote in the complaint’s affidavit.<\/p>\n
