UPMC Children’s doctor, wife stabbed multiple times while sleeping in Edgewood home, police say<\/p>\n
EDGEWOOD, Pa. \u2014<\/p>\n
A UPMC doctor who worked in the critical care of children has died after he and his wife were stabbed multiple times in Edgewood Thursday morning. <\/p>\n
Dr. Idris Evans and his wife were found stabbed in their home on Linden Avenue shortly after 12:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
“It was a very violent scene \u2013 the bedroom furniture broken, mirrors broken. It was a very graphic scene,” said Victor Joseph, assistant superintendent of Allegheny County Police.<\/p>\n
When first responders arrived to the scene, they found Evans and his wife in critical condition. Both were taken to a hospital, where Evans later died.<\/p>\n

County police say 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway entered the house and stabbed the pair multiple times while they were sleeping. <\/p>\n
Police say Evans’ wife ran from the home and called police, reporting that the couple had been stabbed and she was unsure how Hemingway got into their home.<\/p>\n
Evans’ wife told authorities at the hospital she remembered waking up and being attacked by Hemingway, who was in his underwear. She told authorities that she recalled her husband addressing the attacker as “Elijah,” but police say it’s unclear if Evans and Hemingway knew each other or if Hemingway said his name at any point.<\/p>\n
She continued to explain she and Evans tried to fight back. According to the complaint, Evans’ wife was able to get away, yell for their two young children and escaped to the neighbor’s home.<\/p>\n
County police said Hemingway was detained by officers and is now facing multiple charges including homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass. <\/p>\n
Police interviewed Hemingway, who claimed Evans invited him to their home hours before. He also claimed the pair attacked him, however authorities say he was unable to provide details to support his account.<\/p>\n

Neighbor says suspect found in backyard<\/p>\n
Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 spoke to a neighbor who said police found the suspect hiding in her backyard.<\/p>\n
“I was going to walk out in the backyard, and then all of the officers rushed through the backyard, so I just kind of stayed back, and they proceeded, I would say a good hour they were back there, and they found him. It’s pretty dark back there. Once they found him, he appeared to be bleeding and incapacitated,” neighbor Sandra Trappen said.<\/p>\n
Trappen says she was shocked to learn something like this could happen on her usual quiet street.<\/p>\n
“If you see one or two police officers, it\u2019s a lot, let alone if you wake up and find twenty. It sounds clich\u00e9 but it’s not something that\u2019s typical or happens here,” she said.<\/p>\n
Police encourage people to take the extra steps in keeping themselves and loved ones safe.<\/p>\n
“The message is always the same to lock your doors, secure your vehicle, do not leave items visible in your vehicle. Be cognizant of your surroundings. Be aware of what’s going on around you,” Joseph said.<\/p>\n
