Drivers in Erie can now fully access the new roundabout at the intersection of the Bayfront Parkway and Sassafras Street Extension, as PennDOT has reopened the route to traffic.<\/p>\n
Sassafras Street Extension had been closed between the Bayfront Parkway and West Front Street while crews completed work as part of the ongoing Central Bayfront Parkway Improvement Project. The newly opened hybrid roundabout is now fully operational, allowing motorists to travel through the area once again.<\/p>\n
While the roadway is open, PennDOT notes that minor landscaping and miscellaneous construction work will continue over the coming weeks. Drivers are urged to remain alert and watch for workers and changing traffic conditions.<\/p>\n
Recent work in the area included replacing temporary asphalt, constructing new curb gutters, and installing a concrete median between the Bayfront Parkway and West Front Street.<\/p>\n
Construction continues elsewhere along the Bayfront corridor. Holland Street remains closed between the Bayfront Parkway and Second Street as crews build a dual-lane hybrid roundabout. Vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians are currently being detoured via Third Street to State Street.<\/p>\n
Motorists traveling eastbound on the Bayfront Parkway should also be aware that the lane beneath the State Street bridge remains closed due to ongoing roundabout construction at Holland Street. Eastbound traffic must use the lane leading up to the State Street intersection.<\/p>\n
Pedestrian detours remain in place as crews continue work on the project’s multi-use trail.<\/p>\n
The Central Bayfront Parkway Improvement Project is aimed at enhancing safety, improving traffic flow, and strengthening connections between downtown Erie and the waterfront.<\/p>\n
PennDOT is reminding drivers to slow down in work zones, stay alert for changing traffic patterns, avoid distractions, and follow all posted signs and flagger directions.<\/p>\n
Travelers can monitor road conditions and construction updates through 511PA, which provides traffic alerts, travel times, weather information, and live traffic camera feeds.
