SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) \u2014 As temperatures begin to drop, a local organization is once again collecting coats to help people in need stay warm this fall and winter.<\/p>\n
The Scranton Chapter of UNICO National is teaming up with Friends of the Poor and the Catherine McAuley Center for its annual coat drive.<\/p>\n
New or gently used coats can be donated at collection boxes located throughout Lackawanna County, including several local public libraries and businesses such as Vincenzo\u2019s Pizzeria, Northeast Eye and Nibbles and Bits.<\/p>\n
The Lackawanna County Commissioners are also accepting donations at a collection box in the lobby of the County Administration Building at 123 Wyoming Avenue in Scranton.<\/p>\n
Last year, the drive collected 1,110 coats.<\/p>\n
Charlie Spano of Scranton UNICO says the need continues to grow, particularly as children who received coats in previous years get older and need larger sizes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe need is great. The children who benefit from it year after year in the past are now growing up and therefore bigger coats. The need continues to grow, every year. So we encourage everybody to be as generous as possible, both with your clothing and with your check.\u201d<\/p>\n
Coats will be distributed to people in need through Friends of the Poor and the Catherine McAuley Center.<\/p>\n
Donations can also be dropped off directly at the Friends of the Poor\/Catherine McAuley warehouse at 624 Fellows Street in Scranton, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.<\/p>\n
