stabbing death of a UPMC Children’s doctor. <\/a><\/p>\nPittsburgh’s Action News 4 is looking into the lengthy criminal history of Hemingway following the death of Dr. Idris Evans. <\/p>\n
Deadly stabbing of UPMC Doctor <\/p>\n
Dr. Idris Evans and his wife were stabbed multiple times in their home on Linden Avenue in Edgewood, Allegheny County shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 24. <\/p>\n
“It was a very violent scene \u2013 the bedroom furniture broken, mirrors broken. It was a very graphic scene,” said Victor Joseph, assistant superintendent of Allegheny County Police.<\/p>\n
According to a criminal complaint, Hemingway, clad only in underwear, got into the couple’s home by climbing through an open window. <\/p>\n
Evans’ wife told authorities at the hospital she remembered waking up and being attacked by Hemingway, who was wielding a kitchen knife.<\/p>\n
She recalled her husband addressing the attacker as “Elijah,” but police say it’s unclear if Evans and Hemingway knew each other or if Hemingway said his name at any point.<\/p>\n
She continued to explain she and Evans tried to fight back. According to the complaint, Evans’ wife was able to get away, yell for their two young children and escaped to the neighbor’s home where she called police.<\/p>\n
Police interviewed Hemingway, who claimed Evans invited him to their home hours before. He also claimed the pair attacked him, however authorities say he was unable to provide details to support his accounts. <\/p>\n
Hemingway’s Lengthy Criminal History <\/p>\n
Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 has learned Hemingway had an extensive criminal history prior to Thursday’s stabbing. <\/p>\n
Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer in Florida<\/p>\n
A Florida docket from 2025 details the assault on three deputies who approached him after he began yelling inside of a Wells Fargo bank.<\/p>\n
Hemingway allegedly left the bank and walked across the street to the Deltona Plaza Shopping Center. A deputy approached Hemingway, who police say was making concerning statements, including a statement on the deputy being part of a simulation. <\/p>\n
At one point, Hemingway allegedly referred to himself as an Egyptian Pharaoh before running and jumping on parked cars. <\/p>\n
The report states the deputy wanted to have Hemingway be evaluated for a Baker Act, which is a Florida law for someone to be detained for mental health purposes.<\/p>\n
The complaint says a deputy chased Hemingway, who turned and punched the deputy. <\/p>\n
More deputies arrived to the scene and attempted to take Hemingway into custody. Authorities say he hit and pushed one deputy, pushed a second and then kicked a third. All received minor injuries from the altercation. <\/p>\n
He was charged and pleaded no contest to Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer.<\/p>\n
Domestic Violence Charge from Florida<\/p>\n
In a second 2025 case out of Florida, Hemingway allegedly got into an argument with his ex-girlfriend who he lived with in Deltona. <\/p>\n
During this argument, he is accused of punching the woman multiple times and grabbing her by the neck. <\/p>\n
The victim told authorities she ran into a bathroom with her son and locked themselves inside before calling police. <\/p>\n
The complaint states Hemingway refused to speak with deputies when they arrived, saying he did not do anything wrong.<\/p>\n
He was taken into custody for domestic violence charges, with the complaint stating, “A criminal history check on Elijah revealed multiple prior arrested for assault and aggravated assault in Pennsylvania with no prosecution.” <\/p>\n
Break-in in Pittsburgh <\/p>\n
In February of 2026, Hemingway is accused of breaking into the home of his ex-partner in Pittsburgh. <\/p>\n
Police say Hemingway forced his way into the home on Overbeck Street and stole multiple items while his ex-partner was dropping her child off at day care. <\/p>\n
Hemingway allegedly stole a laptop, as well as two iPhones. <\/p>\n
The victim told police Hemingway never lived at her home and was not allowed inside. <\/p>\n
He was facing charges of burglary and theft by unlawful taking in that case. <\/p>\n
Sexual Assault Investigation<\/p>\n
District Attorney Stephen Zappala said authorities are also looking into Hemingway being connected to a sexual assault case in Allegheny County. <\/p>\n
