{"id":295610,"date":"2026-09-28T15:32:12","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T15:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/295610\/"},"modified":"2026-09-28T15:32:12","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T15:32:12","slug":"everyone-in-hazle-township-pennsylvania-gets-10k-if-data-center-is-built-but-theyre-still-pushing-back-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/295610\/","title":{"rendered":"Everyone in Hazle Township, Pennsylvania gets $10K if data center is built \u2013 but they\u2019re still pushing back: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A big developer that\u2019s desperate to build a data center near a Pennsylvania town has reportedly offered to pay every family there $10,000 \u2013 but most are still pushing back, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/15\/us-news\/support-for-ai-data-centers-is-heavily-tied-to-what-you-think-of-trump-poll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">part of a nationwide trend of opposition to such sites.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While seeking approvals for a data center project in the Pocono foothills, Northpoint Development sent letters to the 10,460 residents of nearby Hazle Township this summer, offering to write a check to each household to spend on \u201cwhatever you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Totaling $45 million, the payouts would be a substantial boost for many residents of the town, where the average household income is $60,000. They could use it to cover six months of rent in a two-bedroom apartment or fund their groceries or gas for many months longer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/real-estate\/every-household-in-this-rural-town-receives-10-000-if-a-data-center-gets-built-86554cb7?mod=hp_lead_pos7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">according to the Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania residents are protesting a data center project in Hazle Township. Project Hazelnut \/ Vimeo<\/p>\n<p>But many of the Pennsylvanians are rejecting the payments, skeptical the developer is trying to bribe them into signing off on a data center that could cause noise and light pollution, or simply help the acceleration of AI, which they fear could eradicate broad swaths of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Fasnacht, a retired teacher who lives near the planned location of the new data center, shared the same concern as many other residents around the country protesting data center buildouts \u2013 a new form of NIMBYism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c$10,000 doesn\u2019t match how much it\u2019s going to tank my property value,\u201d Fasnacht told the Wall Street Journal, while enjoying a Scotch and a cigar after a round of golf.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Negra, a retired homeowner, added that the developer\u2019s offer might end up backfiring since it could prompt residents to probe the potential downsides of the data center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it works the opposite way, because most people have the opinion that, \u2018Hey, are they trying to bribe us here?\u2019\u201d he was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition to data centers has grown so strong that people would rather see a nuclear power plant built in their neighborhood than a data center, according to a Gallup poll in May.<\/p>\n<p>Developers have gone to new lengths in an attempt to win over wary homeowners, offering tens of millions of dollars in funding for local schools, fire departments and other services.<\/p>\n<p>At the local Italian festival in Hazle Township, residents spied \u201cFree Amusement Rides Sponsored By Northpoint,\u201d according to the Journal.<\/p>\n<p>NorthPoint Development is offering $10,000 to every household in exchange for their support of its data center project. Project Hazelnut<\/p>\n<p>Direct cash payments to residents could mark the boldest attempt to win over public opinion to date \u2013 though politicians on both ends of the political spectrum have <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/19\/business\/data-center-backlash-poised-to-play-critical-role-in-midterms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grown more resistant to data centers<\/a>, eager to please their constituents as they seek re-election.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has ordered a pause on data center approvals, while New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/14\/us-news\/hochul-orders-election-year-pause-on-new-large-scale-data-centers-to-power-ai-in-ny\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first-of-its-kind moratorium<\/a> on large-scale data center construction.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania\u2019s Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order banning nondisclosure agreements between local governments and data center companies, taking a stand against what he called \u201cpredatory\u201d developers.<\/p>\n<p>John Zola, who lives near Hazle Township in the town of Sugarloaf, said he thinks local politicians across the state are too easily won over by big-time developers \u2013 and then \u201cthe gates open, and then the municipalities provide 10-year tax abatements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NorthPoint\u2019s chief marketing officer Brent Miles said the idea for the $10,000 checks came after a public meeting last year in which outraged residents pressed the company on what they had to gain from the data center.<\/p>\n<p>Residents are skeptical the buyouts are an attempt to \u201cbribe\u201d them into approving the construction.
