SEPTA<\/a> will upgrade three Center City<\/a> trolley stations \u2014 22nd Street, 33rd Street, and 36th Street \u2014 with an $80 million federal grant to improve accessibility.<\/p>\n

According to an NBC10 Philadelphia report<\/a>, on Monday, Sept. 14, SEPTA officials announced that the provider obtained the multimillion-dollar grant through federal All Stations Accessibility Program funding to make the three stations in the Center City Trolley Tunnel fully accessible.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnsuring that every customer can access transit service that is safe, clean, and reliable is a core part of SEPTA’s mission,\u201d said SEPTA Board Chair, Kenneth E. Lawrence Jr., in a statement shared with NBC10. \u201cStation accessibility projects like those this grant will fund are critically important to that effort. I want to thank our congressional delegation for establishing this vital program and working to support our application.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to SEPTA, the 22nd, 33rd, and 36th Street stations were built in 1955 and have not been refurbished since. They are currently accessible only via staircases, preventing people with disabilities who use mobility devices, as well as families with strollers and others unable to use stairs, from using the stations.<\/p>\n

The new round of funding, officials said, will allow all three stations to have elevators connecting the street level to the underground boarding areas for the trolleys.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccessibility is critical for SEPTA and our riders,\u201d said SEPTA General Manager Scott Sauer in a statement shared with NBC10. \u201cAcross the SEPTA system, we are currently advancing more than a dozen Metro and Regional Rail station accessibility projects that will greatly improve the customer experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upgrades will also include installing raised platforms and wayfinding tools. SEPTA also announced it is securing a new fleet of low-floor streetcars as part of the agency’s ongoing trolley modernization effort.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition to upgrading three stations, SEPTA is working on additional trolley stops to make the route fully accessible.
