{"id":295680,"date":"2026-09-28T17:46:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T17:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/295680\/"},"modified":"2026-09-28T17:46:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T17:46:11","slug":"berks-man-driving-133-mph-on-reading-street-before-fatal-crash-police-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/295680\/","title":{"rendered":"Berks man driving 133 mph on Reading street before fatal crash, police say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Muhlenberg Township man was driving at more than 130 mph in a 35-mph zone after a night of drinking at two bars when his SUV crashed into a house in the Hampden Heights neighborhood in the spring, fatally injuring his passenger, investigators said.<\/p>\n<p>Reading police on Friday charged Baltazar Martinez-Almanza, 37, with homicide by vehicle, drunken driving and numerous traffic-related counts.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez-Almanza of the 5200 block of Allentown Pike was free on $20,000 bail following arraignment Friday afternoon before District Judge Tonya Butler.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez-Almanza was critically injured in the April 26 crash, police said.<\/p>\n<p>The passenger is the SUV, Elisa L. Plancarte, 38, of Maidencreek Township,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.readingeagle.com\/2026\/04\/30\/berks-woman-dies-in-hospital-3-days-after-reading-crash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> died<\/a> three days later in Reading Hospital of head injuries, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the probable cause affidavit:<\/p>\n<p>Police responded at 2:12 a.m. to the 1800 block of Hampden Boulevard and found the SUV in the southbound lane with Martinez-Almanza lying injured on the passenger side. A woman later identified as of the passenger, Plancarte, was unresponsive beneath the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>No one was in the house, which has been converted into an insurance business, but it left a large hole in the front wall.<\/p>\n<p>Reading Fire Department personnel reported at least one bottle of beer was visible in the wreckage.<\/p>\n<p>Both occupants were taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>A state police crash reconstruction team was requested to respond to the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Reading police Criminal Investigator Drew Zebertavage rounded up security camera footage that showed Martinez-Almanza and Piancarte at two bars in the hours leading up to the crash.<\/p>\n<p>They entered the first bar, located in the Hyde Park section of Muhlenberg, shortly after midnight and were seen toasting and drinking a shot each about 12:30 a.m. They each consumed a beer before and after the shot.<\/p>\n<p>They entered the second bar, in north Reading, about 1:20 a.m., but there was no further footage.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators obtained a search warrant to have blood drawn from Martinez-Almanza for testing. It showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.136%, which 70% higher the legal limit of 0.08%.<\/p>\n<p>The crash reconstruction report indicated Martinez-Almanza was driving northbound at 133 mph in the 1700 block of Hampden Boulevard before the crash.
