There aren’t many anniversaries big enough to become a destination on their own. America’s 250th birthday is one of them, and in 2026, three cities within easy driving distance offer one of the country’s richest founding-era road trips.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia is where independence was declared. York, Pennsylvania, is where the Articles of Confederation were adopted. Washington, D.C., has served as the nation’s capital since 1800. Connect them over a long weekend or a full week, and you’ll follow the American story from revolution and early government to the present day.<\/p>\n

Here’s how to plan the trip.<\/p>\n

America’s 250th Road Trip Route<\/p>\n

From Philadelphia, York is about 90 minutes west on I-76. From York, Washington is roughly two hours south. If you’re coming from the D.C. area, simply run the route in reverse.<\/p>\n

Stop 1: Philadelphia (Two Days)\"The<\/p>\n

Philadelphia has always been the symbolic heart of American independence, but 2026 is the year the city has been preparing for all along. Events run throughout the year under the banner “52 Weeks of Firsts,” a citywide series highlighting Philadelphia’s role in the birth of many American institutions.<\/p>\n

Around July 4, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway hosts the Wawa Welcome America festival. In 2026, the celebration is expected to be its largest yet, with two weeks of concerts, cultural events, and fireworks over the Philadelphia Museum of Art.<\/p>\n

For history-focused visitors, Independence National Historical Park is the natural starting point. Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and Congress Hall are all within a short walk of one another.<\/p>\n

Timed entry passes<\/a> for Independence Hall are free but required, and summer slots can fill quickly, so reserve as early as possible.<\/p>\n

Two museum stops deserve serious time. The Museum of the American Revolution<\/a> is anchoring its 2026 programming around “The Declaration’s Journey,” an exhibition exploring how the Declaration of Independence influenced more than 100 independence movements around the world.<\/p>\n

A few blocks away, the National Constitution Center<\/a> has opened two new galleries for the semiquincentennial. Walking through the Constitution’s history in the city where it was written is an experience that’s difficult to match anywhere else.<\/p>\n

Practical note: Philadelphia’s historic core is compact and very walk-able \u2014 Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Museum of the American Revolution are all within a few blocks of each other. Ride-share and public transit are easy options for getting between neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

Where to stay: If you want to stay in the city, DoubleTree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City<\/a> is one of the easier Center City hotels for drivers. It is well located and offers on-site self-parking for $48 a day, which is more reasonable than many nearby downtown hotels.<\/p>\n

One more note for sports fans: Philadelphia is also hosting a FIFA World Cup match on July 4th itself at Lincoln Financial Field, which makes the city’s July 4th weekend particularly extraordinary, though also particularly crowded. Plan accordingly.<\/p>\n

Stop 2: York, Pennsylvania (One Day or Overnight)\"Bronze<\/p>\n

The Golden Plough Tavern at York’s Colonial Complex, built in 1741, is one of the oldest surviving structures in Pennsylvania and a reminder that the city that briefly housed the Continental Congress still has the buildings to prove it.<\/p>\n

Most travelers driving between Philadelphia and Washington skip York entirely. That’s a mistake in any year, but especially in 2026.<\/p>\n

When the British threat forced the Continental Congress to leave Philadelphia in the fall of 1777, delegates reconvened in this compact Pennsylvania city about 90 minutes west. It was in York that they completed and adopted the Articles of Confederation.<\/p>\n

The city is marking three milestones in 2026: York County’s 275th anniversary, America’s 250th birthday, and the 250th anniversary of the Articles of Confederation. The Colonial Complex<\/a> is at the center of the story, with guided tours through the Golden Plough Tavern, the General Horatio Gates House, and a reconstructed Colonial Courthouse on the site where delegates met.<\/p>\n

Tours depart from the York County History Center<\/a>, which traces the region’s history from the founding era through its industrial and agricultural roots.<\/p>\n

York is compact and walkable, and a full day is enough to see the highlights at a comfortable pace. To stay overnight, the restored 1925 Yorktowne Hotel<\/a> makes a convenient downtown base, with a public parking garage directly across the street.<\/p>\n

Stop 3: Washington, D.C. (Two to Three Days)\"Washington,<\/p>\n

Washington, D.C. has been the seat of American government since 1800, and in 2026 the Capitol and the city around it take on new significance as the nation marks 250 years of independence.<\/p>\n

Washington anchors the southern end of this route and brings the founding story into the present. The capital was created to house the new federal government, and in 2026 its museums, monuments, and public spaces are taking on an even larger role in the anniversary.<\/p>\n

The Smithsonian’s “Our Shared Future: 250<\/a>” program brings exhibitions, events, and public programs across the institution throughout the year. Highlights include the National Museum of American History’s immersive “In Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness,” which explores how Americans have pursued the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. The National Gallery of Art is also marking the anniversary<\/a> with American art exhibitions and year-round programming, including “Dear America” and a newly reinstalled presentation of its American collection. Admission to both institutions is free.<\/p>\n

July 4 will be the centerpiece. Current plans include the Great American State Fair, the Salute to America 250 celebration, and the traditional fireworks over the National Mall. The fireworks are scheduled to launch from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool area, with additional details still being released as the holiday approaches. If you can choose only one place to spend July 4, 2026, Washington will offer the country’s largest symbolic backdrop.<\/p>\n

With an extra half day, continue about 15 miles south to George Washington’s Mount Vernon<\/a>. Its newly reimagined Education Center debuted in June 2026 with “George Washington: A Revolutionary Life,” an interactive exhibition featuring original objects, immersive galleries, and a recreation of the President’s House in Philadelphia. Mount Vernon is also hosting special America 250 programming throughout the year, including its July 4 “An American Celebration” with historical demonstrations, family activities, a naturalization ceremony, and daytime fireworks over the Potomac.<\/p>\n

Practical note from a local: the Metro is your best friend for navigating D.C. Driving and parking on the Mall during peak summer season is its own kind of historical suffering.<\/p>\n

Where to stay: For a road trip, look outside downtown DC and stay near a Metro stop in Arlington or Bethesda, where parking is easier and usually less expensive. Hilton Arlington in Ballston<\/a> is a strong pick because it sits next to the Metro and lists self-parking at $24 a day. Hyatt Regency Bethesda<\/a> also works well for its direct Metro access, with self-parking around $30 a day. Some travelers also use nearby Montgomery County public garages or Metro garages, which can cost less.<\/p>\n

Planning Your Trip<\/p>\n

A comfortable version of this itinerary takes about five days: two days in Philadelphia, one day in York \u2014 or an overnight if you want to explore beyond the historic center \u2014 and two to three days in Washington, with an optional half day at Mount Vernon.<\/p>\n

I you didn’t have a chance to make the trip before Independence Day, don’t worry: the following months still offer much of the same programming with smaller crowds. Philadelphia’s “52 Weeks of Firsts” runs throughout the year, Smithsonian and National Gallery exhibitions continue across 2026, and York’s Colonial Complex operates year-round.<\/p>\n

Amtrak’s Northeast Regional connects Philadelphia and Washington with frequent daily service, so you can easily visit those two cities without a car. York is the exception; you’ll need to drive or rent a car from either Philadelphia or Washington.<\/p>\n

For flights, Philadelphia International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport are the most convenient gateways for this route.<\/p>\n

The Bigger Picture<\/p>\n

What makes this road trip unusual is that the cities themselves are the attraction. You don’t have to search for the history; it’s still right in front of you. The building where independence was debated and adopted still stands. The courthouse where the Articles of Confederation were approved still welcomes visitors. And the city created to house the new government remains the nation’s capital today.<\/p>\n
