UPMC Hamot has earned its third Magnet\u00ae designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program\u00ae, a distinction that recognizes excellence in nursing practice and patient care.<\/p>\n
The achievement reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care through skilled nursing, collaboration among healthcare teams, and a focus on continuous improvement.<\/p>\n
Magnet recognition is considered one of the highest honors for nursing excellence in the healthcare industry. While only about 10% of hospitals nationwide hold Magnet status, just 3% have earned the designation three times, highlighting the significance of UPMC Hamot’s accomplishment.<\/p>\n

More importantly, it reflects their dedication to listening to patients, working collaboratively and continually improving the care we provide to our community.\u201d<\/p>\n
The process for obtaining Magnet recognition is rigorous and requires participation from hospital leaders and staff throughout the organization. Hospitals must complete an extensive electronic application, provide detailed documentation of patient care practices, undergo an on-site evaluation, and receive approval from the Commission on Magnet Recognition.<\/p>\n
To maintain the designation, healthcare organizations must reapply every four years and demonstrate measurable improvements in quality outcomes and patient care. Hospitals seeking redesignation must show they have continued to build upon Magnet principles and improve performance since their previous recognition.<\/p>\n
Murphy said the Magnet journey has had a lasting impact on the organization.<\/p>\n
