The Fire, the Northern Liberties music venue that played host to an illustrious list of Philadelphia and national touring acts in the 2000s and 2010s, will shut its doors this week.

Karen Lauria Saillant, the owner of the club on 412 W. Girard Ave. that is housed within the Philadelphia Bar & Grille, announced in a Facebook post that the music venue and the bar will close permanently on Wednesday.

“I am not able to continue after the death of my beloved son, Christian Bygott, who was our manager & our backbone,” she wrote, citing the reason for closure.

Bygott, who had been the club’s talent buyer and was also, like his mother, an opera singer, died in 2024 at age 41.

Saillant, who has long touted the Fire as Philly’s only fully woman owned music venue, purchased the Philadelphia Bar & Grille with her husband Bernie Bygott in 1988.

In Jonathan Demme’s Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington-starring 1993 AIDS drama Philadelphia, the exterior of the bar is shown in an opening credit sequence while Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia” plays.

After her husband became severely incapacitated in 1999, Saillant founded the Fire. In the decades that followed, many rising stars played there, particularly in the years between 2003 and 2017 when Philly music manager and talent buyer Derek Dorsey ran the venue.

Acts that plays at the Fire and went on to big things, include John Legend, Rilo Kiley, My Chemical Romance, Amos Lee, Maroon 5, Kurt Vile, Alex G, Jason Mraz, Modern Baseball, Hop Along, Damien Rice, Santigold, Iron & Wine, Cold War Kids, and more.

In 2022, Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance — who played the Fire in 2002 — shouted out the venue in a show at the Wells Fargo Center.

In 2023, a Mural Arts mural of Legend painted by Philadelphia artist and clothing designer Alloyius Mcilwaine was added to the wall of the building. The mural also includes a depiction of Japanese singer Yasko Fujiì, who starred in several operas produced by Saillant’s International Opera Theater of Philadelphia company, which was headquartered upstairs at the Fire. The Opera Company has productions in the works through the end of the year, but it’s office will no longer be in the Fire building.
