The Steelers continued their preparation for Thursday night’s game against the Cleveland Browns, the team’s second consecutive AFC North game.<\/p>\n
With a short week, the team once again held what Coach Mike McCarthy referred to as a ‘jog-through’ on Tuesday, with player participation an estimation for the second straight day.<\/p>\n
Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (not injury related\/conditioning) was listed as full for the first time this season on Monday, even though it was an estimation of the walk-through. He was a full participant again on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
McCarthy was asked before Tuesday’s practice if he expects Porter to play this week considering he was listed as a full participant on Monday.<\/p>\n
“We hope so,” said McCarthy. “Today is another day. We have a full slot here. Obviously, on a Thursday schedule, so this will be more of a jog-through.<\/p>\n
“We’ll have a little more pace and pretty much similar amount of reps. We’ll see how he does today.<\/p>\n
“I think Joey is just like anybody else that’s coming back. We want to make sure he gets everything he needs.”<\/p>\n
McCarthy was also asked if he would expect Porter to be on a ‘pitch count’<\/p>\n
“That’s really what the week is for,” said McCarthy. “Tomorrow will be the first time we really get to go full speed the way the practice structure is. We’ll clearly take in all the information and then we’ll make those decisions.”<\/p>\n
While Porter missed the first three games of the season, multiple players have been called upon to step up in the secondary.<\/p>\n
One player is rookie Daylen Everette, who saw increased playing time against the Bengals on Sunday, seeing action on 46% of the defensive snaps, compared to 2% of the defensive snaps in Week 1 and 15% of the defensive snaps in Week 2.<\/p>\n
“I think it’s a combination that Daylen has been pushing to get out there,” said Coach Mike McCarthy. “You’ve seen the way he’s played.<\/p>\n
“He’s had a couple interceptions in the competitive two-minute drills in back-to-back weeks. So, he’s been pushing to play, and I think it’s a by-product of that.”<\/p>\n
Everette caught the eye of the Steelers coaches during the scouting process before the NFL Draft, and he hasn’t disappointed<\/p>\n
“It starts from the scouting process,” said defensive coordinator Patrick Grahm. “You saw a physical corner at Georgia with good speed, obviously time speed but also game speed. And since he’s been here, he’s worked really hard. Him, and R.J. (rookie Robert Spears-Jennings) spend a lot of time together going over the calls on their own. You feel them in the building a lot of times, just going over stuff, just waiting for their opportunity to play.<\/p>\n
“You gain more confidence in them when you see that diligent work taking place. And then, just like any other player, practice. Practice is the closest thing we get to the game. Once you see execution in practice, you start to gain more confidence in their abilities and what they’re grasping.<\/p>\n
“And from there, I try to make the players know if you’re at the game, you’re live to play. Injuries occur, but also you want to give guys opportunities. They work hard, they’re active for the game, try to get everybody on the field if we can.”<\/p>\n
Everette was inserted in the defense not because others weren’t playing well, but because he earned it.<\/p>\n
“It wasn’t about ‘over’ anybody,” said Graham. “They earn the right through practice to be put there on the field. Asante, Dean, Everette, ‘B.E.’ (cornerback Brandin Echols), all those guys have been practicing very well. I like the matchup for our guys against a lot of guys.<\/p>\n
“We have a bunch of guys in that room that are fast, they’re physical, they tackle in the run game, they have short-space quickness, good length and short memories. I love the mentality in that room. That’s what I see from those guys and luckily, we’ve got some good ones.”<\/p>\n
