The commission said 23 of those drivers collectively owed more than $130,000 in overdue tolls.

More than 90% of the drivers stopped took steps to pay their outstanding balances or comply with toll and registration requirements. During a separate enforcement action, troopers stopped a driver who owed more than $100,000 in unpaid tolls. That person later entered into a payment plan.

Since the April operation, state police have stopped more than 1,100 additional drivers with toll-related registration suspensions, according to the commission.

“The first operation made it clear that ignoring toll invoices does not make the obligation go away,” Pennsylvania Turnpike CEO Mark Compton said. “Most of our customers pay their tolls. For those who repeatedly ignore invoices and ultimately have their vehicle registration suspended, there are real consequences.”

More than 67,000 registrations remain suspended

Drivers who accumulate at least $250 in unpaid tolls and fees, or fail to pay four Toll By Plate invoices, may be referred to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for registration suspension.

Since 2018, the turnpike has sent more than 200,000 suspension-eligibility letters to Pennsylvania vehicle owners. More than 67,000 vehicles remain under active suspension, the commission said.

Driving with a suspended registration can result in significant fines, a driver’s license suspension and the immediate impoundment of the vehicle. The commission also supports law enforcement’s use of license-plate recognition technology to identify vehicles with suspended registrations both on and off the turnpike.

“Operating a vehicle with a suspended registration due to unpaid tolls is a violation of the law,” Cpl. Richard Levan of Pennsylvania State Police Troop T said.

Levan said the partnership allows state police to address violations directly, promote accountability and encourage safer travel.

Part of a broader effort

The crackdown is part of a broader effort to collect overdue tolls and hold habitual violators accountable. The commission also uses collection agencies, registration suspensions and civil litigation. In serious cases, it works with law enforcement and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.

As of August 2026, the commission had collected more than $74 million in unpaid tolls and fees from drivers referred to toll enforcement.

“Our approach is about making it easier to pay and harder to avoid paying,” Pennsylvania Turnpike Chief Operating Officer Craig Shuey said. “Customers have more payment options than ever, but for those who repeatedly ignore invoices and collection efforts, we are also expanding the tools and partnerships available to hold them accountable.”

Drivers urged to pay invoices

Drivers can avoid additional fees, registration suspensions and other enforcement measures by paying their bills on time through E-ZPass or Toll By Plate, according to the commission. E-ZPass customers can save up to 50% on tolls.

For drivers without E-ZPass, cameras photograph vehicles traveling on the turnpike and record their license plates. The commission generally sends an invoice to the vehicle’s registered owner within 30 days of the trip.

The commission said it collects between 92% and 94% of toll transactions, a rate consistent with industry standards. The turnpike receives no tax revenue for its operations and relies on tolls to fund maintenance, construction and other operating expenses.

See news happening?
