The covered bench is located a quarter mile into the trail (heading south) from the East Concord Volunteer Fire Hall, located at 9413 Genesse Road in East Concord.

The new rest stop on the Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail in East Concord was built by Timberbuilt.

“Many thanks to everyone for what they’ve done to support the development of the trail,” Mary Brummer, president of the Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail, said. “We’re very grateful to recognize this beautiful, meaningful gift from the folks at Timberbuilt to the Western New York community. They created and situated this lovely, covered bench on the rail trail in this location, and it’s our hope that trail users will enjoy this for a long time and consider it a place of rest, meditation, quietude, or just a nice spot to sit with a friend and catch up. I noted the other day when I was walking around here the abundance of wildflowers. It’s just a beautiful natural place. I hope everyone gets lots of chances to enjoy it in the various seasons of the year.”

Timberbuilt specializes in designing and building earth-friendly timber frame homes. George Klemens, founder of Timberbuilt, explained how the project came to be.

“Typically, architecture students from universities and local high schools have come over for tours of Timberbuilt, and we’ve had a handful over the years that come on a two-week program,” Klemens said. “I always look for a project when they come that they can build something, and this came to mind. I think this is the best rail trail that I’ve seen in Western New York. It’s a gem, beautiful. So I made a little sketch, gave it to the guys in the office, and they turned it into a working drawing. And for two weeks, this high school student from East Aurora worked on it. He cut some of the pieces on our sawmill at work. And when his time was up, we had this little stack of timber. Then a group from sasi (an organization that connects people with developmental disabilities with creative opportunities) came to watch us build it, but they ended up putting it all together with a little bit of instruction.”

ECRT President Mary Brummer and Founder of Timerbuilt George Klemens participated in the ribbon cutting.

“Timberbuilt contacted us and said they thought this would be a nice addition to the trail,” Brummer said. “So we decided on a location, and this seemed to be appropriate because it’s the site of an old water tower, because this used to be a rail corridor, and steam engines used to come through and used a lot of water. So, volunteers cleared the area, and it made a perfect spot for the bench to be sited. And the bench is also on wooden skids, so if we decide to move it at some point, it’ll be an easy job to relocate.”

Brummer also took time to talk about the current and future projects of the ECRT.

“You may have noticed that there’s work being done in Kissing Bridge along the trail. We are collaborating with the folks at Kissing Bridge to resurface the section of the trail along their property, and also to put in an ADA compliant trailhead right at Kissing Bridge Central. The idea is we want people of all abilities to be able to use bikes starting there. We’re trying to link Kissing Bridge with Sprague Brook Park. And the next big thing we really want to do is to resurface the five miles between Kissing Bridge and Springville and make this a really comfortable spot for people to ride bikes and walk.”

ECRT is a volunteer organization that relies on grants and donations to continue work on the trail. They have a major fundraising event this coming weekend. The 2026 EA2EVL Fondo is a 42 mile non-competitive bike ride open to cyclists of all skill levels. It will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3 starting at 10 a.m. in East Aurora, and ends in Ellicottville with a finish line party at Holiday Valley.
