Taylor Hayward wasn\u2019t exactly sure what to expect when he fired off a DM to the official Instagram account for Wheatus, the early 2000s rock band. He had loved them since his time working as a college DJ in Dublin.<\/p>\n
Hayward, a co-founder of Fishtown<\/a>\u2019s Evil Genius Brewing Company<\/a>, figured he\u2019d get a polite decline to his invitation for the band to play the brewery\u2019s 15th anniversary party<\/a>.<\/p>\n However, they said yes. <\/p>\n And on Saturday, six months after Hayward sent the message, Wheatus frontman Brendan B. But it was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n The now-viral moment came in the middle of \u201cTeenage Dirtbag,\u201d Wheatus\u2019 most recognizable song that has become a millennial anthem.<\/p>\n Wheatus played the song during their headlining set for Evil Genius\u2019 anniversary party, held all day Saturday on a closed-off section of Front Street in front of the brewery.<\/p>\n Hayward said the brewery\u2019s block parties usually attract a crowd, but Saturday\u2019s event drew more than 10,000 people throughout the day.<\/p>\n After the show, Hayward said he met the band, whom he described as gracious and down-to-earth.<\/p>\n He believed the band was the perfect fit for a brewery whose beers are named after pop culture references ranging from McLovin\u2019s conversation with a liquor store clerk<\/a> in \u201cSuperbad\u201d to Tommy Tutone\u2019s \u201880s one-hit-wonder \u201c867-5309.\u2033<\/p>\n \u201cWe wanted to celebrate,\u201d Hayward said. \u201cOur culture in our company is nostalgia \u2014 that\u2019s the type of beer we make \u2014 and we felt like it would be such a natural fit to have them.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe don\u2019t have a beer named after them, but may have to now.\u201d<\/p>\n
