That is in the area of George K. Cupples Stadium, where a City League football game between Westinghouse and University Prep was played.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Jason Lando said Pittsburgh Police and Pittsburgh Regional Transit Police were working precautionary security at the game.

Lando said several fights broke out. Officers tried to break up those fights when someone pulled a gun and opened fire.

Two teen boys and a teen girl were hit by gunfire. They were all taken to a hospital and are in stable condition.

The shooter then took off running, and drones were deployed to search the area in an attempt to find the person.

Police say the shooter is a male, but they are working on a more specific description.

Lando said detectives are reviewing officers’ body cam videos because some of them were within feet of the shots being fired.

“It’s very unfortunate. You know, we should, regardless of whether you’re a student, a family member, or a member of the community, you should be able to go to these games and enjoy yourself, have a good time, not worry about violence,” Lando said.

One person was taken in for questioning at Pittsburgh Police Headquarters, and a gun was recovered from the scene.

No arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed.

On Friday Morning, Pittsburgh Public Schools released a statement regarding the shooting:

“Pittsburgh Public Schools is deeply concerned by the violence that occurred Thursday evening on the South Side following a football game at Cupples Stadium.

“The game had concluded, and the incident occurred outside of the stadium. As the situation unfolded, Pittsburgh Public Schools School Safety personnel immediately placed the stadium into Secure Mode, restricting entry and exit to help ensure the safety of students, staff and spectators who remained inside. School Safety worked in coordination with responding law enforcement until it was determined that the stadium could safely return to normal operations.

“Our thoughts are with the young people who were injured, their families, and all of the students, staff and community members impacted by this deeply troubling incident.

“The safety and well-being of our students remains our highest priority. We are grateful to the Pittsburgh Police officers and other public safety personnel who were present and responded immediately. The District will continue to work closely with our public safety partners and will make appropriate supports available to students and staff affected by the incident.”

Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.

Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW

TOP STORIES FROM CHANNEL 11 NEWS

©2026 Cox Media Group
