PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia police are searching for the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that injured a cyclist. They’re also reviewing officers’ response time to the scene.<\/p>\n
The crash happened early Sunday morning in the 5400 block of Broad Street in Logan, across from Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital.<\/p>\n
Dashcam video provided to Action News, and now part of the police investigation, shows an orange or burgundy car striking a cyclist before performing a donut and speeding away.<\/p>\n
One witness, Adam Maiale of Blue Bell, said he was riding in an Uber when he saw the crash. He and his girlfriend, who is a nurse, ran to help the victim.<\/p>\n
“At that point in time, I thought it was shock, but we just needed to get the guy to safety. Tthat was the most important thing,” Maiale said.<\/p>\n
An ambulance responded to the scene and medics treated the cyclist. The victim’s bicycle was left nearby with its back tire damaged.<\/p>\n
Maiale said he hopes the driver is held accountable.<\/p>\n
“I just want to make sure justice is served for the guy who got hit – the victim – because it could be a long road ahead for recovery,” he said.<\/p>\n
Witnesses who contacted police told Action News they were dissatisfied with how long it took officers to respond to the crash.<\/p>\n
“I would argue there was no response time. Police officers are busy, I get it. I don’t mean to disrespect them in that sense, but this was something where someone got hit by a car. It’s a serious crime,” Maiale said. “It is important that in those scenarios hopefully someone can get out to them faster.”<\/p>\n
The witness said he waited about an hour but did not get a chance to speak with police before leaving. Police said a report was filed.<\/p>\n
Maiale also said the victim was conscious and speaking with him after the crash. An update on the cyclist’s condition was not immediately available.<\/p>\n
