ERIE \u2013 Erie County Executive Christina Vogel presented a proposed $565.4 million county budget on Wednesday, Sept. 30, calling for a 2.9 percent increase over the 2026 budget while avoiding a tax increase through the use of county fund balance.<\/p>\n
The proposed 2027 budget totals $565,356,846. According to an overview released by Vogel\u2019s office, the spending plan is focused on public safety, public health and the delivery of essential county services, with expanded investment in emergency medical services (EMS) listed among its priorities.<\/p>\n
Vogel\u2019s proposal includes a $1.19-per-hour employee wage increase or 4 percent, whichever is higher. Her office also reported that county operations have been streamlined over the past nine months, particularly in Information Technology and the courts. Nine long-term vacant positions have been eliminated as part of those efforts, with no layoffs.<\/p>\n
The proposed budget includes $113,405,939 for wages and fringe benefits in 2027. Vogel\u2019s office reported monthly expenditures have remained below 2026 budgeted levels despite inflation. The county\u2019s historical vacancy rate of 4 percent is cited as representing a $4,538,238 reduction in wage and fringe costs.<\/p>\n
The budget would use $4,550,386 from the county\u2019s unrestricted fund balance to avoid a tax increase. The county\u2019s audited 2025 unrestricted fund balance was $51,339,416.<\/p>\n
For comparison, the county had proposed using $4,107,332 of the fund balance in 2025, but ultimately used $298,967 that year.<\/p>\n
Vogel\u2019s office said the proposed budget is intended to provide a full accounting of the cost of county operations while maintaining core services and addressing the county\u2019s needs. The proposal will now go through the county\u2019s budget process, with Erie County Council expected to work with the administration on the final 2027 spending plan.<\/p>\n
