The Erie Police Department is building community relationships one cup of coffee at a time.

Wednesday morning, the department is inviting residents to participate in Coffee With a Cop, an opportunity to meet officers, ask questions and voice concerns about the community.

Mighty Fine Donuts is one of two locations hosting the event. Residents also can meet members of the Erie Police Department at Pressed Books and Coffee on West Eighth Street.

The event gives residents a chance to connect with the officers who serve the community outside of an emergency or call for service.

In a city of more than 90,000 people, the Erie Police Department has 194 officers working to serve and protect the community.

Events such as Coffee With a Cop are part of the department’s broader focus on community policing, which emphasizes building relationships, opening lines of communication and helping residents get to know the people behind the badge.

Tom Lenox, captain of community policing, said conversations between residents and officers can help strengthen relationships throughout the city.

“The more we have opportunities, you know, to meet with our citizens and our citizens kind of show up at these two different locations to start their day to get to know a police officer,” Lenox said. “That’s what I think will start mending and healing our community together. And it starts with conversation, just like anything else.”

Coffee With a Cop is happening from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday.
