{"id":302748,"date":"2026-10-09T01:16:10","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T01:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/302748\/"},"modified":"2026-10-09T01:16:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T01:16:10","slug":"progressive-activist-will-gross-plans-to-run-for-philly-city-councilmember-mark-squillas-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/302748\/","title":{"rendered":"Progressive activist Will Gross plans to run for Philly City Councilmember Mark Squilla&#8217;s seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Will Gross, a progressive activist and the Democratic leader of a <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/south-philly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Philadelphia<\/a> ward, said Thursday that he plans to run for City Council in a race that could pit him against longtime sitting Councilmember <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/mark-squilla\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Squilla<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In a statement to The Inquirer, Gross said he \u201cintend[s] to run for the First District to fight for transformative policies that deliver for working class Philadelphians.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI\u2019ve been hearing from a lot of people throughout the district, from <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/port-richmond\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Port Richmond<\/a> to South Philly and everywhere in between, who are eager for new leadership and are encouraging me to run,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Every City Council seat <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-members-reelection-20251216.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-members-reelection-20251216.html\">will be on the ballot next year<\/a>. Gross said that he would have \u201cmore to say\u201d about his campaign after this November\u2019s midterm election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">If Gross officially launches a campaign and Squilla runs for reelection, as he has said he intends to, it could make the 1st District <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-elections-2027-squilla-bass-20260714.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-elections-2027-squilla-bass-20260714.html\">a key battleground<\/a> ahead of the May primary election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt\u2019s a democratic society, and people have a right to run for office,\u201d Squilla said Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Gross would likely be supported by the city\u2019s left-leaning organizations, which are <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-elections-2027-squilla-bass-20260714.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-elections-2027-squilla-bass-20260714.html\">looking to grow their influence on Council<\/a> by toppling more centrist Democratic incumbents. He recently launched a campaign website that identifies him as a labor organizer and a democratic socialist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Meanwhile, Squilla has long been aligned with organized labor and much of the city\u2019s Democratic establishment. He has repeatedly cruised to reelection since he first took office in 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-elections-2027-squilla-bass-20260714.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Three Philly City Council districts emerge as key battlegrounds in the 2027 election<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Squilla angered progressives in 2024 when he supported the effort <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-approves-sixers-arena-20241212.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-approves-sixers-arena-20241212.html\">by the 76ers to build a new arena in Center City<\/a>. That project would have been located adjacent to <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/chinatown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chinatown<\/a>, and opponents said it would have been an existential threat to the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/sixers-new-stadium-philadelphia-city-council-vote-20241219.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/sixers-new-stadium-philadelphia-city-council-vote-20241219.html\">Council approved legislation<\/a> to green-light the arena project. But weeks after the vote, the Sixers announced <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/philadelphia\/sixers-arena-south-philly-center-city-20250112.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/philadelphia\/sixers-arena-south-philly-center-city-20250112.html\">that they were abandoning the plan<\/a> and would construct a new arena in the South Philadelphia stadium district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Gross, the leader of the South Philadelphia-based 2nd Ward and the owner of OX Coffee in Queen Village, was a prominent opponent of the Center City arena proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He has also previously clashed with the party establishment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In 2023, Gross\u2019 ward endorsed <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/kendra-brooks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kendra Brooks<\/a> and Nicolas O\u2019Rourke, who were running for at-large seats on Council on the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/working-families-party\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Working Families Party<\/a> ticket. He was one of 100 members of the Democratic City Committee who signed a public letter in support of Brooks and O\u2019Rourke, who both went on to <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/philly-at-large-council-results-2023-20231108.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/philly-at-large-council-results-2023-20231108.html\">win seats on Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">At the time, City Committee chair Bob Brady warned that members could be expelled from their positions in the Democratic party for supporting candidates from another political party. <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/clout\/philly-city-council-race-working-families-party-democratic-party-20231103.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/clout\/philly-city-council-race-working-families-party-democratic-party-20231103.html\">Brady said then<\/a> that \u201cthe Second Ward is really jerking me around\u201d and that Gross had told him the ward would back off the WFP endorsements, but never did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In 2022, Gross <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/philadelphia-state-house-districts-democratic-primary-progressives-20220514.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/philadelphia-state-house-districts-democratic-primary-progressives-20220514.html\">was one of four Democratic candidates<\/a> who ran for an open seat in the state House representing parts of Center City. He lost in the primary to State Rep. Ben Waxman, who still represents Pennsylvania\u2019s 182nd district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Gross is <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-elections-2027-squilla-bass-20260714.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/city-council-elections-2027-squilla-bass-20260714.html\">one of several progressives<\/a> who may challenge incumbent Council members next spring amid a national wave of leftist candidates winning competitive primaries against establishment-aligned <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/democratic-party\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Democrats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Longtime labor organizer Seth Anderson-Oberman has said that he may again challenge Councilmember <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/cindy-bass\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cindy Bass<\/a>, who represents the 8th District in North and Northwest Philadelphia. Bass, who has said she intends to run for reelection, narrowly beat Anderson-Oberman in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">And <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/curtis-jones-reelection-morgan-cephas-20260928.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/curtis-jones-reelection-morgan-cephas-20260928.html\">The Inquirer has previously reported<\/a> that two progressive criminal justice reform advocates, Celeste Trusty and Leigh Owens, are among a handful of candidates considering running in the 4th District.
