Throughout the season, on every non-game Friday, PhiladelphiaFlyers.com will feature a memorable moment from team history.

Bill Barber, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Flyers Hall of Fame, remains the all-time goal-scoring champion in franchise history with 420 regular-season goals. In fact, Barber is the only player in team history to score 400 or more goals for the orange and black.

The top five are rounded out by Brian Propp (369 goals), Tim Kerr (363), Bobby Clarke (358) and John LeClair (333).

During the latter part of his career, Barber was plagued by chronic bad knees. The issue cut short his career, forcing the early retirement of the seven-time NHL All-Star Game participant and two-time Stanley Cup winner. Barber officially retired on August 22, 1985. However, the last game he played was late in the 1983-84 campaign.

Barber was never one to enjoy drawing much attention to himself. He placed team goals far above individual accomplishments. He’s best known, of course, as the left winger on the famous LCB Line with Clarke at center and Reggie Leach on the other wing.

However, on October 9, 1983, Barber had the spotlight to himself. On that night, Barber became the first—and, to date, only—member of the Flyers’ 400-goal club.

The milestone came during a two-goal performance for Barber in a 7-1 rout of the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Spectrum. Barber opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the first period, assisted by Brad Marsh and Dave Poulin. The goal was his 400th in the NHL.

Later in the same game, Barber increased his career total to 401 and his season total to three. At 16:52 of the second period, Barber struck on the power play. Ray Allison and Propp collected the assists.

At the time he reached his 400th goal, the 32-year-old Barber became just the 19th player in NHL history to achieve that feat. Today, entering the 2026-27 NHL season, 110 players have hit that milestone. Forty-four have done so while playing for just one franchise.

The 1983-84 season, Barber’s final season in which he was able to suit up, saw the Hockey Hall of Fame left wing post 22 goals and 54 points in 63 games for head coach Bob McCammon’s team. He later dressed in three playoff games (one goal, one assist).

The Flyers drafted Barber as a center with the seventh overall pick of the 1972 NHL Draft. However, he primarily played left wing over the course of his professional career. He ranks 18th all-time in goals among NHL left wingers.

Barber sits just behind one of his contemporary legends: Montreal Canadiens winger Steve Shutt (424 goals). Meanwhile, on the current all-time list, Barber is slightly ahead of longtime Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn (415 goals).

The 2026-27 campaign marks the 60th season of Philadelphia Flyers hockey.
