Erie police accident investigators are reviewing video in their ongoing investigation into a crash Oct. 8 involving a motorcycle and a work van that killed a city man.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook on Oct. 9 identified the victim as Lamar Smith, 39, of Erie. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:50 p.m. Oct. 8 following the accident, which was reported at 12:28 p.m. at the intersection of West 12th Street and Greengarden Boulevard, according to Cook and Erie police.

According to Erie police, Smith was driving a Suzuki motorcycle east on West 12th Street and was in the left lane heading straight, and a 2022 Ford Transit work van was traveling west and was in the left turn lane to turn south onto Greengarden Boulevard. Both vehicles appeared to be trying to make it through a yellow light at the intersection when they collided, Cpl. John Stephens, an accident investigator with the Erie Bureau of Police, said Oct. 9.

The driver of the work van, a 20-year-old man from Wattsburg, was not injured in the accident, Stephens said.

Police have obtained video from several different sources and are reviewing it as part of the ongoing investigation, Stephens said.
