{"id":303380,"date":"2026-10-09T22:22:07","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T22:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/303380\/"},"modified":"2026-10-09T22:22:07","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T22:22:07","slug":"keith-harings-mural-we-the-youth-is-officially-philadelphia-historical-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/303380\/","title":{"rendered":"Keith Haring&#8217;s mural &#8216;We the Youth&#8217; is officially Philadelphia historical place"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Keith Haring\u2019s famed 1987 mural We the Youth, the artist\u2019s only collaborative mural that still stands in its original location, is now an officially designated historical place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"> At a public meeting on Friday, the Philadelphia Historical Commission voted unanimously to add the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/point-breeze\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Point Breeze<\/a> mural, on a rowhouse at 22nd and Ellsworth Streets, to the city\u2019s Register of Historic Places. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">With this designation, the building\u2019s owner, listed as \u201c2147 Ellsworth LLC\u201d<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/property.phila.gov\/?p=361012900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> in city records<\/a>, will not be allowed to remove or alter the appearance of the mural without the Historic Commission\u2019s review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It\u2019s the fifth mural in Philadelphia to be an  officially designated and protected landmark, and only the first outdoor mural to do so. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"> The other designated murals are The Dream Garden inside the Curtis Center, the New Deal-era murals inside the Family Court building, the frescoed ceiling at <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/old-city\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Old City<\/a>\u2019s St. Augustine\u2019s Roman Catholic Church, and Iron Plantation Near Southwark inside the Southwark Station Post Office in South Philly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cTo finally see the community here stand for the recognition of this unique piece of collaborative work is particularly meaningful,\u201d Simon Castets, executive director of the Keith Haring Foundation, said after the decision, citing Haring\u2019s connection to Philadelphia and the foundation\u2019s mission to preserve the artist\u2019s local works. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Haring, a native of Reading,  was one of the defining artists of the 20th century and known for his bold drawings and colorful graffiti-style paintings. He died in 1990, at age 31, due to AIDS-related complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In 1987, Haring and a group of 14 Philly and New York students collaborated on We the Youth to commemorate the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The mural features vibrant figures dancing across the facade of a three-bedroom rowhouse. In 2013, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/mural-arts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mural Arts<\/a> Philadelphia undertook a massive restoration of the mural, located on a shared wall at 2147 and 2149 Ellsworth Streets. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Friday\u2019s decision comes after months of advocacy from the Haring Foundation, Mural Arts, and the Neighborhood Gardens Trust, which collectively oversee the mural\u2019s upkeep. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The three parties have pushed for the mural\u2019s historical protection because of the mural\u2019s artistic and cultural significance to Point Breeze. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThis is an amazing moment, and I\u2019m so proud of our city,\u201d <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/jane-golden-mural-arts-stepping-down-20250825.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/jane-golden-mural-arts-stepping-down-20250825.html\">Mural Arts founder and former CEO Jane Golden<\/a> said. Ahead of the vote, she said, \u201cI thought, \u2018Philly, you have to come through.\u2019 And the city did. It was beautiful. It underscores why public art matters.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The meeting largely drew support from Point Breeze residents and other community members, including those wearing shirts with Haring\u2019s signature figurines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">However, prior to the vote, attorney Sean Whalen, who represents 2147 Ellsworth LLC, spoke out against the designation, citing the extensive preservation efforts needed to maintain the mural in its current state and location. He said he supported a \u201cmethodology that is feasible.\u201d But under the bounds of designation, these efforts, he said, are not \u201clogistically capable.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Whalen and Ori Feibush, the property manager at 2147 Ellsworth LLC, pointed to the structural infirmities of the wall on which the mural is placed, saying the mural has delaminated from the underlying salmon brick. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWe are not talking about a wall that is failing. We are talking about a failed wall,\u201d Whalen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Feibush shared a video showing the back of the mural that he recorded last week with a scope camera.  As a result of a poor \u201cstucco and plaster connection,\u201d he said, there are gaps between the mural and its support wall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThere is absolutely no portion of the mural that is attached to the plaster in the brick wall. It is 100% freestanding,\u201d said Feibush who, with Whalen, suggested the removal and reinstallation of the mural as the best step forward. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Throughout the hour-and-a-half-long discussion, commissioners Zachary Frankel, Emily Cooperman, Robert Thomas, and others agreed that the damage to the mural and shared party wall is common among decades-old properties and that there are viable options for preservation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThere are many possibilities,\u201d Cooperman said regarding the next steps in the mural\u2019s preservation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/mural-arts-new-executive-director-emily-mello-jane-golden-20260812.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/mural-arts-new-executive-director-emily-mello-jane-golden-20260812.html\">Current Mural Arts executive director Emily Mello<\/a> said she and others will work diligently with community partners to ensure this newly designated historical marker and piece of Haring\u2019s legacy remains a \u201ccultural memory\u201d that never fades. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt may take a lot of resources,\u201d Mello said.
