Beaver County Sheriff Tony Guy is running against U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio, with a focus on affordable housing, improved law enforcement training and civil political discussions.<\/p>\n

“I am not going to walk lockstep with what the Republican Party demands. I’m going to be my own man,” Guy said. “And I’ll say this, too. I’m not Donald Trump either. I’m not going to worship at the altar of Donald Trump. I think many, many, many of the policies that he is instituting have been very good for the country.<\/p>\n

“The last thought that goes through my head before I take a vote in Congress is going to be about the people in my district, not about parties.”<\/p>\n

Guy, who grew up in Aliquippa, has had a long career in law enforcement, serving as a Pennsylvania State Police trooper and now as the sheriff of Beaver County. He emphasized the need for more well-trained law enforcement officers. <\/p>\n

“The reasons for crime are broad, including oftentimes lack of opportunity. So we’ve got to give people more opportunities, especially young people,” Guy said. <\/p>\n

Guy also addressed the rising cost of housing, which he attributed to investment companies purchasing properties to convert them into rentals. <\/p>\n

“They bid these things up because they have deep pockets and they want this property, but what that does is it takes the younger people and pushes them out of the market. I think that’s sad, having to wait until you’re 40 to have a home,” Guy said. <\/p>\n

He pointed to student loans as another factor contributing to the lack of homeownership and said universities need to play a role in ensuring a better return on investment for certain college degrees. <\/p>\n

Guy also expressed disagreement with Deluzio on several issues.<\/p>\n

“Number one, no tax on tips. Deluzio voted against it. No tax on overtime. Deluzio voted against it. Those are the people that we talked about earlier that are in the trades, the electricians, the IBEW people,” Guy said.<\/p>\n
