COLUMBUS, Ohio \u2014 By late in the second period, the Columbus Blue Jackets were outshooting the Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> 27-6 and owned a 54-14 shot attempt advantage. The only thing Columbus didn\u2019t do to the Penguins was land the knockout blow. <\/p>\n

The Penguins found their legs late in the second period and overcame a battalion\u2019s worth of mistakes to force overtime. And then a shootout, but shootout struggles continued, and the Penguins lost 3-2 in a shootout to Columbus at Nationwide Arena Friday. <\/p>\n

Penguins lines tonight: projected lineup and starting goalie \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n

Penguins rookie goalie Sergei Murashov made plenty of top-shelf stops, and Penguins winger Bryan Rust scored on the play affectionately known as \u201cThe Rusty\u201d when he swept off the left wing toward the net and extended around Columbus goalie Cam Talbot late in the second period.<\/p>\n

Rust\u2019s goal sparked the Penguins to emotionally engage in the contest after more often performing their best stilted impersonation of Boris Karloff\u2019s heavy-footed Frankenstein. <\/p>\n

Murashov was largely spectacular, stopping 40 of 42 shots he faced in regulation, including a myriad of high-danger chances. Overall, Murashov stopped 43 of 45. Talbot stopped 16 of 18 in regulation. <\/p>\n

Murashov also stopped a two-on-none in overtime with a sharp kick-save that cleared the puck from danger, and he stopped gold-medal-winning Zach Werenski from feet away in the final seconds in overtime. <\/p>\n

Goal Recap<\/p>\n

1-0 CBJ: The Penguins flirted with disaster but had not buckled in the first 10 minutes. However, that ended at 10:52 when four Penguins players collapsed around the cage, but Columbus defenseman Zach Werenski had the puck with speed at the top of the zone. Werenski raced to the right circle where both Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell converged (Rust left his right-wing position), leaving Damon Severson (1) wide open for a hard one-timer from the left circle, which he buried. <\/p>\n

2-0: The Penguins\u2019 zone defense was present, though not closely engaged. Mathieu Olivier\u2019s (2) wrist shot from about 30 feet caught the post behind Murashov and deflected off the back of the Penguins goalie at 11:40 of the second period. <\/p>\n

2-1: The Rusty. Again. <\/p>\n

For the second time in two games, Rust (2) used his body to shield the puck along the goal line and extended the puck around Talbot at 14:30 of the second period. <\/p>\n

2-2: No, seriously. The Penguins got off the mat and tied the game early in the second period. Evgeni Malkin intercepted a clear, and the Penguins remained on the attack. Rickard Rakell swatted a rebound into traffic at the net, and Malkin (3) finished the play. <\/p>\n
