{"id":303740,"date":"2026-10-10T11:40:07","date_gmt":"2026-10-10T11:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/303740\/"},"modified":"2026-10-10T11:40:07","modified_gmt":"2026-10-10T11:40:07","slug":"two-police-officers-shot-in-west-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/303740\/","title":{"rendered":"Two police officers shot in West Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Two Philadelphia police officers are in the hospital after being shot early this morning in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/west-philly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">West Philadelphia<\/a>, officials said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The officers, from the city\u2019s 19th District, were responding to reports of a man with a gun on the 100 block of North 52nd Street when they received \u201csignificant gunfire,\u201d Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel said at a news conference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A 40-year-old officer was shot three times, Bethel said. A 33-year-old officer was shot 12 times. Both were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where they are in surgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Two more police officers were shot at when they approached the house, Bethel said. Police called in a SWAT team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWe were able to locate this individual in a tree, and we were able to take him into custody,\u201d Bethel said. The man was found with a shotgun and two handguns, one of which he\u2019d taken from a police officer after shooting him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Mayor <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/cherelle-parker\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cherelle L. Parker<\/a> said both officers are \u201cbadly wounded\u201d and asked people to pray for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cTheir families right now are feeling unspeakable pain, but watching this department and those families sticking close together as a village has definitely shown me what the indomitable power of the human spirit is and can mean during times like this,\u201d Parker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">This is a developing story.
