Sabres trade former first-round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for two defenseman.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A former Buffalo Sabres first-round pick is moving on after the team traded him to Pittsburgh.

Defenseman Ryan Johnson was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins Monday in exchange for defensemen Caleb Jones and Daniel Laatsch, the team announced Monday.

Johnson was the 31st overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, and played parts of three season with the Sabres. The bulk of his time in Buffalo came in the 2023-24 season where he played in 41 games and tallied seven assists.

Jones comes to Buffalo with the most NHL experience out of the three players involved in Monday’s trade. Jones, brother of Blackhawks defenseman and Stanley Cup champion Seth Jones, is on his sixth team and only played in seven games with Pittsburgh last season. He has suited up in 255 NHL games, scoring 14 goals and 56 points in those appearances.

Daniel Laatsch is a former seventh-round pick, and while he was drafted in 2021, he has not yet seen NHL action. Laatsch played in 10 games in the AHL with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season. He also played four seasons with the University of Wisconsin, and scored 6 goals and 26 points in 126 games.

Buffalo did win their matinee matchup against Florida Monday, so it remains to be seen how the new additions will work into the lineup.

Sabres trade former first-round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for two defenseman.
