PHILADELPHIA — A suspect has been charged with murder after an ambush shooting in Philadelphia early Saturday morning left one police officer dead and another seriously injured.<\/p>\n

Officer Shane Seiber, 40, a 10-year veteran of the force, died at the hospital after being shot three times in West Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Kevin Bethel said Seiber’s wife and other family members were able to be by his side before he passed.<\/p>\n

Seiber leaves behind a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter, Bethel said.<\/p>\n

“This will be a period of mourning for us, but we will stand tall as a department and get through this together,” Bethel said.<\/p>\n

The other officer who was shot was wounded 12 times. That officer, a 33-year-old with five children, is currently hospitalized in stable condition.<\/p>\n

“He’s not out of the woods yet, but he is stable,” Bethel said.<\/p>\n

District Attorney Larry Krasner identified the suspect on Saturday afternoon as 35-year-old Eric Lewis.<\/p>\n

Lewis is facing a list of charges in connection with Seiber’s killing, including Murder, Homicide of a Law Enforcement officer and multiple weapons offenses.<\/p>\n

He is also being charged with attempted murder and other offenses for allegedly shooting the officer who was injured.<\/p>\n

In addition, Krasner said Lewis is being charged with attempted murder for shooting at nine other officers who were not struck.<\/p>\n

Court records show Lewis had prior arrests for gun, drugs, and assault charges between 2013 and 2020.<\/p>\n

District Council 33 confirms Lewis was union member employed by the Philadelphia Water Department.<\/p>\n

President Greg Boulware called what happened “heartbreaking,” “deeply troubling,” and said, “District Council 33 will continue to cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities as this matter proceeds.”<\/p>\n

Chopper 6 was over the procession for an officer killed in a shooting early Saturday morning in West Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

Police were dispatched to the 100 block of North 52nd Street shortly after 12:20 a.m. for a report of a man with a gun on a porch.<\/p>\n

The officers arrived around 30 minutes later and were shot soon after stepping foot onto the porch.<\/p>\n

Officials say the suspect took off down an alleyway and shot multiple times at other officers, who were not hit.<\/p>\n

There was a search and a neighborhood lockdown as police searched for the gunman, who was eventually taken into custody after falling out of a tree.<\/p>\n

Officers recovered two handguns and a shotgun. Bethel said one of those handguns belonged to an officer who had been shot.<\/p>\n

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Officer Seiber.<\/p>\n
