DESTIN-FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (WPVI) — The S.S. United States<\/a> is now one step closer to becoming the world’s largest artificial reef.<\/a><\/p>\n

Officials have now set a date to sink the ship off the Gulf Coast of Florida.<\/p>\n

Leaders in Okaloosa County, Florida, say the vessel will be deployed about 22 NM southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach<\/a>, the second week of November 2026.<\/p>\n

“This is an exciting move forward to create a one-of-a-kind resource for the environment and for our tourism industry,” officials said.<\/p>\n

The ship has been undergoing remediation<\/a> since it was towed from Philadelphia’s Delaware Riverfront last year.<\/p>\n

More details on the deployment are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
