\n The broadcaster has examined<\/a> the potential financial impact of Manchester City’s alleged advantages between 2009 and 2018 after an independent commission found the club guilty of charges relating to inflating sponsorship income and disguising owner funding.\n<\/p>\n

\n Manchester City deny wrongdoing and have appealed.\n<\/p>\n

\n While much of the focus has been on clubs which missed out on Champions League football, European qualification or even Premier League survival, the BBC’s figures suggest Reading were also financially affected.\n<\/p>\n

\n The Royals spent the 2012\/13 season in the Premier League, finishing 19th before suffering relegation back to the Championship.\n<\/p>\n

\n According to the BBC’s analysis, every club that finished below City during the relevant period could argue they missed out on one position’s worth of Premier League merit payments.\n<\/p>\n

\n In the 2012\/13 season, the value of a single Premier League place was around \u00a3756,000.\n<\/p>\n

\n Had City not occupied second place in the table, Reading would have moved up from 19th to 18th, potentially entitling the club to an additional merit payment worth more than three-quarters of a million pounds.\n<\/p>\n

\n The BBC stressed that its calculations are not intended to represent compensation claims and do not suggest clubs would definitely have achieved different sporting outcomes.\n<\/p>\n

\n Instead, the figures attempt to quantify the financial opportunities clubs may have lost during a period in which City allegedly gained a significant competitive advantage.\n<\/p>\n

\n Across English football, the BBC estimates clubs may collectively have missed out on as much as \u00a3844 million through lost Premier League prize money, relegations, missed European qualification and domestic cup competitions.\n<\/p>\n

\n For Reading, the figure is considerably smaller than the losses estimated for clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Hull City and Everton.\n<\/p>\n

\n However, for a club that has since endured years of financial turmoil and ownership issues, an extra \u00a3756,000 would represent a significant sum.\n<\/p>\n
