\t \t Touring the new\u00a0facilities<\/p>\n
Following opening remarks, guests toured parts of the 10-story building at 3396 Fifth Ave., stopping to learn about specialized classroom and research technologies that offer hands-on, interprofessional learning experiences for SHRS students and others in the schools of the health sciences. The 306,000-square-foot building went through an extensive stakeholder design process to meet current and future needs for all didactic and clinical environments, including state-of-the-art classrooms, simulation spaces and dry labs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Faculty members who led the tours emphasized the importance of the new facilities to both students and researchers. The ambulance simulator, for instance, enables students in emergency medicine \u2014 and, in the future, athletic training, physician assistant studies and nursing students \u2014 to practice receiving patients in the ambulance and then transferring them down the hall to the clinical simulation suites for exams and diagnoses.\u00a0<\/p>\n
At their previous location, athletic training students frequently used second-hand equipment from Pitt Athletics and were limited in the amount of classroom space in which they could practice, while their new facility includes updated equipment and technology that fits their expanded classrooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n
