The seven adults, two children and unborn fetus who died in a mass shooting at a Perry Street residence in Erie Oct. 9 have been released to funeral homes by the Erie County Coroner’s Office as Erie police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Coroner Lyell Cook on Oct. 12 identified the victims of the shooting, all of Erie, as Twila Tanner, 51; Angelina Stone, 24, who he said was pregnant and was at full term; Jonathan Stone, 19; Matthew Stone Jr., 21; Michelle Stone, 44; and Lora Roberts, 37. Cook also identified the man police accuse of shooting the others before killing himself as Matthew Stone Sr., 45.

Cook said Oct. 12 that he is not permitted to release the names of the other two shooting victims, a 5-year-old boy and a girl who was 1 year and 10 months old, because they are under 18. Erie police also did not release the names of the children.

Cook ruled the death of Matthew Stone Sr. as a suicide and the deaths of the others as homicides in a mass shooting that took place the late afternoon of Oct. 9 at and around a residence at 722 Perry St. All but Lora Roberts were pronounced dead at the scene beginning at about 9:45 p.m. Oct. 9, according to Cook. Lora Roberts was taken to the hospital from the shooting scene and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:39 p.m. Oct. 9, he said.

All members of the Stone family, as well as the two young children, lived at 722 Perry St., and Tanner and Roberts lived in other areas of the city, according to Cook.

Matthew Stone Sr. and Michelle Stone were husband and wife and Matthew Stone Jr., Jonathan Stone and Angelina Stone were their children, according to Erie police. The 5-year-old boy and the 22-month-old girl were Angelina Stone’s children, police reported.

A motive in the shooting remained unknown Oct. 12.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said Oct. 12 that investigators were beginning to go through the many cell phones they collected at the shooting scene as they continue to work on determining what set off the shooting and why. Police are also continuing work on a timeline of events, he said.

According to police, officers were initially sent to the 700 block of Perry Street on Oct. 9 at 4:53 p.m. after the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system alerted them to gunfire in the area. Police also received some 911 calls reporting the shooting, Lorah said previously.

Officers who arrived on scene within minutes found Tanner and Roberts outside the house, deceased and with gunshot wounds to the head and face. The others were found dead inside the residence, and police have said all of those deaths occurred before police arrived at the house.
