including his pregnant daughter who was set to be induced days later. <\/a><\/p>\nErie Police Chief Rick Lorah said since that day, police have been piecing together what happened.<\/p>\n

Family says Stone ‘exercised significant control’ over family<\/p>\n
Family members shared with detectives that Stone would exercise significant control over his wife, Michelle, and their children and grand children.<\/p>\n
“According to relatives, he controlled the family’s finances, including Supplemental Security Income received for Isaiah and restricted when family members could leave the residence or spend time with relatives,” Lorah said. <\/p>\n
Those same family members said the behavior had gone on for years, but increased when Michelle Stone first became pregnant. <\/p>\n
“As we look back at everything investigators have learned, we can see that there were long standing concerns within this family. There was a prior domestic violence incident involving the same firearm. There were reports of controlling behavior and concerns about mental health and substance abuse,” Lorah said.<\/p>\n
Same gun used in 2019 incident against wife <\/p>\n
In 2019, Lorah said Matthew Stone Sr. had a domestic violence incident against his wife with the same gun that had been used in Friday’s mass shooting.<\/p>\n
During a preliminary hearing against him, authorities say Michelle Stone changed her statement and charges were withdrawn. <\/p>\n
After that 2019 incident, no other incident was reported from the home. <\/p>\n
“Matthew had no criminal history and was legally permitted to possess that firearm,” Lorah said. <\/p>\n
Pregnant daughter had planned to change name, leave <\/p>\n
Angelina Stone, who was 24 and set to be induced days after the shooting, had worried about her father’s health and planned to change her last name. <\/p>\n
According to Lorah, Angelina had filed to do so one year before the shooting. <\/p>\n
“She explained that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine, and did not want her association with her father to affect those plans,” Lorah said. <\/p>\n
The application to change her last name closed in April. <\/p>\n
In addition to changing her last name, authorities said Angelina sent messages saying she planned to leave her family.<\/p>\n
Those messages alleged that her father was kicking her and her brothers out, and that Matthew Stone Sr. was abusive to her brother. <\/p>\n
“When detectives searched the home following the shooting, they found numerous belongings packed into bags and boxes in Angelina’s bedroom,” Lorah said. <\/p>\n
Moments before the shooting<\/p>\n
At 4:39 p.m. on the day of the shooting, authorities say Angelina Stone called her aunt, Laura Roberts, on Facebook Messenger. That call lasted only two minutes and 21 seconds. <\/p>\n
“We know that when that call ended, Laura sent Angelina a message telling her she was on the way,” Lorah said. <\/p>\n
Laura Roberts then called the significant other to Matthew Stone Sr.’s brother, saying that Angelina needed help. <\/p>\n
Within ten minutes of that call, Roberts and Twila Tanner were outside the Perry Street home where they would be shot dead by Matthew Stone Sr. <\/p>\n
The Unknown <\/p>\n
Authorities say despite knowing about the details leading up to the deaths of 44-year-old Michelle Stone; Stone’s pregnant daughter, 24-year-old Angelina Stone; his sons, 19-year-old Jonathan Stone and 21-year-old Matthew Stone; 51-year-old Twila Tanner; and 37-year-old Lora Roberts, they cannot say for certain what happened inside the home. <\/p>\n
“Those are important limits to what this investigation can tell us. We recognize that the community has been looking for answers. We have worked to establish the facts as carefully and thoroughly as possible,” Lora said. <\/p>\n
Detectives describe home as ‘extremely filthy’ <\/p>\n
Lorah said while it does not provide motive, the conditions inside the home did raise many concerns.<\/p>\n
“The shower, toilet and kitchen sink did not appear to be working, and numerous two liter bottles were filled with urine throughout the house,” Lorah said. <\/p>\n
Authorities say they received information the property had been condemned, however Erie Water reported that it was still receiving service<\/p>\n
