{"id":307602,"date":"2026-10-16T01:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T01:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/307602\/"},"modified":"2026-10-16T01:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T01:28:11","slug":"prt-considers-permanent-closure-of-wabash-tunnel-in-pittsburgh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/307602\/","title":{"rendered":"PRT considers permanent closure of Wabash Tunnel in Pittsburgh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/1792114091_618_4a0a8774-983a-4c94-a3b0-d2630c50cec6_1653489233.file.png\" width=\"48\" height=\"48\" alt=\"Raquel Ciampi\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>PITTSBURGH \u2014<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"0\">The Wabash Tunnel may be permanently closing.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"1\">Pittsburgh Regional Transit announced the tunnel would be closing for good on Dec. 1, pending the approval of the PRT board. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"2\">\u201cThe Wabash Tunnel has a long history in Pittsburgh, but today it primarily serves private vehicle traffic rather than public transit,\u201d said PRT CEO Katharine Kelleman. \u201cWith an estimated $43 million needed to rehabilitate the tunnel, we have a responsibility to focus our limited resources on the infrastructure that is most critical to delivering safe, reliable transit service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"3\">According to officials, if the tunnel is kept open, it would need an estimated $43 million in rehabilitation work. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"4\">The recommendation was made for the closure due to the tunnel&#8217;s condition, safety and long-term viability. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"5\">The proposal will be considered on Oct. 23.  <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"6\">According to PRT, the closure will not affect the Wabash Park and Ride. <\/p>\n<p>History of the Wabash Tunnel<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"8\">PRT\u2019s Board will consider the proposal at its regularly scheduled meeting on Friday, October 23.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"9\">The tunnel, which was constructed in 1903 as part of the Wabash-Pittsburg Terminal Railroad, is primarily used for private vehicle traffic. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"10\">Around 1,500 vehicles use the Wabash Tunnel each day.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PITTSBURGH \u2014 The Wabash Tunnel may be permanently closing.
