{"id":307764,"date":"2026-10-16T06:22:12","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T06:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/307764\/"},"modified":"2026-10-16T06:22:12","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T06:22:12","slug":"western-pennsylvania-school-for-blind-children-community-celebrates-white-cane-day-with-parade-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/307764\/","title":{"rendered":"Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children community celebrates White Cane Day with parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Students and staff from the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children paraded through Oakland Thursday to celebrate White Cane Day. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">The observance serves as a symbol of independence for visually impaired people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">The participants celebrated alongside the University of Pittsburgh spirit squads and the school\u2019s mascot, Roc the Panther. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, joined the students and staff for the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Weihenmayer, who recently wrote a book detailing his experiences, met with students following the parade. During the gathering, students had the opportunity to speak with the adventurer and ask him questions about his accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Weihenmayer spoke about the broader meaning of the event for the visually impaired community. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cSo this is one a special day to be walking down the street celebrating, you know, not only, you know, the fact that, you know, blind people want to be integrated into the world and we want to live full, adventuresome lives.
