For Boston College football, the bye week couldn\u2019t have come at a better time\u2014right after BC fell to No. 21 Southern Methodist<\/a>, capping off a rough couple of weeks that included a narrow victory against an FCS opponent in Maine<\/a> and an in-conference loss to Virginia Tech<\/a> in the pouring rain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now, the Eagles (2\u20133, 0\u20132 Atlantic Coast) hope that the bye week helped get their season back on track ahead of an Alumni Weekend homefield matchup against conference opponent Pittsburgh (5\u20131, 2\u20131 Atlantic). <\/p>\n

While the Eagles\u2019 loss to SMU did not go as badly as it could have, BC players and coaches likely can\u2019t help but feel like they could\u2019ve put in an even better effort and avoided self-inflicted errors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This week, BC faces a slightly less intimidating matchup, but the Panthers represent a massive obstacle nonetheless. Pitt is coming off an upset loss to North Carolina and will be looking for a significant rebound.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What To Expect From Pittsburgh:
\nOffense:<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh\u2019s offense ranks 24th nationally<\/a>, averaging about 460 yards per game. Fifth-year senior Holden Geriner leads the offense, starting in place of quarterback Mason Heintschel, who tore his ACL and is out for the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Geriner completed 27 of 44 passes for 219 yards with two interceptions in his first start against UNC. Fans can expect many quick throws and handoffs to keep him comfortable. His top target is wideout Cataurus Hicks, who leads the team with 365 yards. If the BC secondary can shut Hicks down and the line can put some pressure on Geriner, the Eagles have a good chance at putting up another impressive defensive performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Defense:<\/p>\n

Pitt\u2019s defense ranks 21st in the country, with an average of 291 yards allowed per game. The Panthers\u2019 run defense is ranked second in the country<\/a>, giving up just 50 yards per game on the ground, so the Eagles\u2019 running backs should expect a stingy defense with little room to run.\u00a0 BC\u2019s rushing attack, however, ranks outside the top 50\u2014averaging 153 yards per game.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for BC, the Panthers\u2019 secondary ranks outside the top 50 in yards allowed. As such, the Eagles\u2019 best hope for offensive productivity is moving the ball through the air\u2014something they\u2019ve struggled with all year.<\/p>\n

Outlook:<\/p>\n

Both teams roll into Chestnut Hill on Saturday looking for a rebound. The Panthers lost their undefeated record to North Carolina but remain 6.5-point favorites, while BC is looking to get a conference win and avoid another disastrous season. The matchup seems to promise a defensive grind, featuring an elite run defense against an offense that ranks 104th in the country and scores just 19 points a game.\u00a0<\/p>\n

BC ranks 37th in total defense<\/a>, which could keep Pitt\u2019s new-look offense\u2014led by a fresh quarterback\u2014from settling in. BC has been fast out of the gate, outscoring opponents in the first quarter but trailing the rest of the way.
