The forecast low Saturday night/Sunday morning for the Scranton area is 32 degrees; it would be the first time we hit the freezing mark this fall.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — The Farmer’s Almanac estimates the growing season in the Scranton area ends around October 13 and around October 15 in the Williamsport area.

The earliest 32-degree temperature recorded for the fall season here in the Scranton area was on September 21; that happened in 1956

The latest into the fall it ever dropped below freezing was in 1946, when it didn’t happen until November 15.

The National Weather Service has records dating back from more than 100 years ago, since 1901. Averaging out all of the dates of the first 32-degree temperature of the fall season, the mean comes out to be October 16, only a few days off from the Farmer’s Almanac prediction, and only a few days off from what will likely happen this year here in the Scranton area. 32 degrees is our forecast low for the WNEP backyard Saturday night, which would likely not happen until close to sunrise Sunday morning, October 18.

Most of the time in the past 10 years, the growing season has ended within a few days of each other this week. So whether you are ready for these colder temperatures or not, we are actually right on track with what’s considered average.

This year was a shorter growing season here in Northeastern PA, though. That’s because we had a late-season freeze back in the spring. It dropped to 32 degrees on May 12 earlier this year.

The National Weather Service issues frost advisories and freeze warnings as needed, when temperatures potentially threaten vegetation and crops during the climatological growing season. Once the first fall freeze occurs, meteorologists will end issuing those alerts until it begins again in the spring.

The forecast low Saturday night/Sunday morning for the Scranton area is 32 degrees; it would be the first…

[15
178,180,179
post-308325","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-scranton","tag-scranton","tag-scranton-headlines","tag-scranton-news
["GET
