A lifetime of service, education, and adventure has taken retired U.S. Navy veteran Mel Sundin around the world, but ultimately led him to call Erie home.<\/p>\n
Sundin’s military career began aboard the USS Niagara Falls off the coast of Vietnam in the early 1970s. What started as a deployment during a pivotal period in American history grew into a distinguished Navy career spanning more than two decades.<\/p>\n
During his years of service, Sundin traveled extensively, visiting more than 100 countries and experiencing cultures across the globe. Along the way, he achieved a number of professional milestones, including becoming the first Public Affairs Officer for the Pacific Submarine Force in Hawaii, a groundbreaking role that helped shape communications for the Navy’s submarine fleet.<\/p>\n
His service also provided opportunities to meet several well-known celebrities and public figures, adding even more unique experiences to an already remarkable career.<\/p>\n
While his accomplishments in uniform are impressive, Sundin also found lasting success in his personal life. Now 78 years old, he and his wife, Kris, have been married for 46 years.<\/p>\n
Retirement marked the beginning of a new chapter rather than the end of an active career. Sundin went on to earn a Ph.D. in Communications and dedicated himself to higher education, teaching students at both the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville and Penn State Behrend.<\/p>\n
From military service and world travel to academic achievement and teaching, Sundin’s story reflects a lifetime of leadership, learning, and dedication.
