LOWER MERION — A Lower Merion committee has recommended the township enter a new five-year police cooperation agreement with Narberth.

The Lower Merion Police Committee recommended that the commissioners authorize the township manager and superintendent of police to execute a cooperation agreement with the borough.

The agreement delineates responsibilities of both the Lower Merion and Narberth police departments, and “formalizes cooperation for operations, planning, policy development, training, and the provision of police services to Narberth Borough by Lower Merion Township.”

Lower Merion Police Superintendent Andy Block outlined the Memorandum of Understanding details.

Under the agreement, Lower Merion Police provides backup service to the borough when its officers aren’t available or when Narberth needs additional assistance.

“Under the police jurisdiction act, we must have an MOU that delineates what our responsibilities are with respect to Narberth and Lower Merion Police officers,” Block said.

The MOU formalizes responsibilities and cooperation for operations, planning, policy development, training, and providing police services to the Narberth by the Lower Merion Township Police Department.

“The municipal boundaries remain unchanged,” Block said. “The Lower Merion Police Department officers are sworn in both Lower Merion and the Borough of Narberth. The Narberth Police officers are only sworn in the Borough of Narberth. So, we respond there. We can handle the calls. We can make arrests, but the borough officers do not leave and come into Lower Merion unless there’s a request from a supervisor for mutual aid.”

The agreement also includes other provisions, such as a media policy that restricts public comment on jointly investigated issues. Other provisions allow Narberth to continue using Lower Merion’s lockup. The agreement also allows Narberth to use Lower Merion animal control officers.

Lower Merion also agrees to make its in-house training available to Narberth officers.

With the committee’s unanimous recommendation for approval, the board of commissioners will vote on it at their next meeting.

LOWER MERION — A Lower Merion committee has recommended the township enter a new five-year police cooperation agreement…

[16
182,183,185,184,186,200,139,28,210
post-309350","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-lower-merion","tag-local-news","tag-lower-merion","tag-lower-merion-headlines","tag-lower-merion-news","tag-lower-merion-township","tag-montgomery-county","tag-news","tag-pennsylvania","tag-top-stories-dtd
["GET
