PENNSYLVANIA – A “disease detective” from the Centers for Disease Control is in Pennsylvania this week to take a closer look at the measles outbreak.<\/p>\n
According to the latest numbers from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, there are 1,286 measles cases, and the CDC wants to know why the outbreak is deadlier this time around.<\/p>\n
The CDC said measles typically kills one to three of every 1,000 unvaccinated people it infects.<\/p>\n
In the current outbreak here in Pennsylvania, the CDC said it’s already killed five people and possibly a sixth out of about 1,300 cases.<\/p>\n
Researchers said they think it might have to do with age. Measles is usually considered a childhood disease, but health officials said two-thirds of cases in the state are adults.<\/p>\n
In 1978, the CDC set a goal to eliminate measles from the United States by 1982. It was considered gone in 2000.<\/p>\n
