NORTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. – Less than two weeks away from election day, just over 1,800 voters in Lehigh County will be getting new ballots.<\/p>\n
The ballots are being resent after a North Whitehall Township referendum question was worded incorrectly on the first batch, deeming all of them uncountable.<\/p>\n
“North Whitehall has a referendum, there’s six precincts there, about 1,800 or so voters; the referendum was worded wrong,” says Michael Paston, Chief Clerk, Lehigh County Board of Elections.<\/p>\n
The issue is due to incorrect wording on a referendum question involving the purchase of open space.<\/p>\n
Michael Paston, the county’s chief clerk of elections, says voters have been notified, and new ballots are being sent out soon.<\/p>\n
“What we’ve done is issue relabels on all the new ballots so the first ballots, when they’re returned, they won’t be counted; they get kicked out by the machine behind me when the envelope is scanned; they’ll be taken out,\u201d said Paston.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen when the second ballot comes in, those will be the valid ballots,” he explained.<\/p>\n
Paston says despite the issue, there is still more than enough time for everyone’s votes to be counted.<\/p>\n
“They have plenty of time to put them in the mail. If they’re not comfortable with that, they can use a drop box. If they’re double concerned, they can always go to their polling place, but they should bring their new ballot with them and surrender it, and they can vote on the machines,\u201d said Paston. \u201cThey can also come here to our office and vote on the spot if they’d like.\u201d<\/p>\n
Voters impacted should get their new ballots by Monday.<\/p>\n
Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3rd.<\/p>\n
