Pennsylvania’s wine industry is raising a glass to a major milestone. During a celebration for Wine Month at Penns Woods Winery, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding announced a $2 million investment in Wine Marketing and Research Grants aimed at boosting local wine sales, production quality, and tourism.

The timing of the investment highlights a golden era for the Commonwealth’s vineyards. Just last week, Penns Woods was named a finalist for American Winery of the Year in the prestigious 2026 Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards—marking the first time a Pennsylvania winery has earned the nomination. The winner will be announced in December.

“As America’s 250th year celebrations continue, we’re honoring William Penn, who planted the seeds of Pennsylvania’s wine industry,” Secretary Redding said, noting that the Commonwealth has grown from colonial-era roots into the fourth-ranking wine producer in the nation. “Shapiro Administration investments in research and promotion, business planning, infrastructure, and tourism are keeping that success growing.”

The state’s wine sector has quietly transformed into a powerhouse economic driver:

Over 400 licensed wineries now operate across five distinct wine regions in Pennsylvania.

The industry supports 10,756 jobs, generates $518.2 million in wages, and contributes $1.77 billion annually to the state economy.

Wineries pull in $747 million in annual tourism revenue, turning rural acreage and scenic valleys into premier destination spots.

Andrew Yingst, vice president of the Pennsylvania Wine Association (PWA), emphasized that the $2 million influx will help sustain a massive statewide marketing push.

“This crucial investment accelerates our transition from a local hidden secret to national recognition, showcasing the diverse wines being grown and produced in Pennsylvania,” Yingst said.

The announcement took place at Penns Woods Winery in the Brandywine Valley, a family business embodying the American dream. Founded by Italian immigrant and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Gino Razzi—who brought winemaking techniques from Abruzzo, Italy, in the 1970s—the vineyard is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Today, the winery is led by next-generation family members, including President Carley Razzi and Winemaker Davide Creato. Backed by past state support—including a $15,000 PA Farm Bill Farm Vitality Grant—the winery has expanded operations while remaining a bustling fall tourism hub complete with live music, local artisans, and seasonal events.

“Great wine begins with healthy vineyards, and building a sustainable industry requires meaningful investment in the agricultural businesses behind every bottle,” Carley Razzi said. “We’re grateful to see Pennsylvania supporting that growth and helping our industry compete on a larger stage.”
