{"id":314415,"date":"2026-10-26T09:38:13","date_gmt":"2026-10-26T09:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/314415\/"},"modified":"2026-10-26T09:38:13","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T09:38:13","slug":"montgomery-county-builds-resting-place-for-unclaimed-cremated-remains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/314415\/","title":{"rendered":"Montgomery County builds resting place for unclaimed cremated remains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                                                                                                                                                                                                                        County resting place to house nearly 300 people\u2019s remains<\/p>\n<p>The county coroner\u2019s office is the largest in Pennsylvania, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montgomerycountypa.gov\/archival-document?id=18646\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investigates thousands of deaths<\/a> each year that are reported due to unexpected or suspicious circumstances. The office investigates what caused the person\u2019s death and classifies the manner of death.\n<\/p>\n<p>After that, Darby said, officials do their best to ensure the person\u2019s remains are entrusted to their loved ones. They also assist in supporting families with finding low-cost burial options, if financial concerns are a barrier.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try to do our due diligence in finding family members or friends that would want to make burial arrangements,\u201d she said. \u201cDespite our best efforts, we are left with these abandoned or unclaimed cremains.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Darby said the coroner\u2019s office currently has almost 300 abandoned or unclaimed cremated remains. The names of the decedents are <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.montgomerycountypa.gov\/files\/2026-08\/County%20Cremation%20List%202026_AOD.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shared in a public list<\/a> on the office\u2019s website so that family members can still come forward if they learn that their loved ones\u2019 remains are there.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis dignified resting place ensures that even those who might be overlooked are given the respect that they deserve, and I think that\u2019s something that our community can be proud of,\u201d she said.\n<\/p>\n<p>The new resting place, located in a \u201cpeaceful,\u201d grassy area next to the coroner\u2019s office headquarters, will have space for more than 1,000 cremated remains \u2014 although Darby said they \u201chope not to fill it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Other coroner\u2019s offices and medical examiner offices in the region will also be able to use the place as a resting dignified place for cremated remains they have in their possession.\n<\/p>\n<p>An internal fan will ward off moisture and humidity, and remains will be placed in shelves with labeling, Darby said.\n<\/p>\n<p>The county plans to hold a formal ceremony in the spring, she said, to place the remains in the resting place.
