Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh is urging pet owners to take simple safety precautions to keep their animals safe and stress-free during Halloween.

Dr. Miguel Ortiz, director of veterinary medicine at the shelter, emphasized that early preparation can prevent medical emergencies while families celebrate the holiday.

“Halloween can bring extra excitement, unfamiliar sights and sounds and tempting treats that can put our pets at risk,” Ortiz said. “A little preparation can go a long way toward preventing emergencies and helping pets feel safe while their families celebrate.”

The organization highlighted several common seasonal hazards for household animals, including toxic treats, fire risks from decorations and increased anxiety caused by trick-or-treaters. Unfamiliar noises, frequent doorbell ringing and costumes can overwhelm pets and increase the likelihood of animals escaping from homes.

Certain Halloween treats pose severe health risks to animals. Chocolate, particularly dark or baking varieties, is toxic to dogs and cats, while sugar-free candies and gums containing xylitol can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar in dogs. Candy wrappers also present choking hazards and potential intestinal blockages if swallowed.

Pet owners who suspect an animal has eaten something harmful should call their veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center hotline at 888-426-4435, which operates 24/7 but may charge a consultation fee.

When dressing pets in costumes, owners should prioritize comfort and safety over appearance. Outfits should allow animals to move, see and breathe freely without small or dangling parts that could be chewed off and ingested. Owners should never force an uncomfortable pet to wear a costume and can opt for a festive collar or bandana if signs of stress appear.

Decorations can also create household hazards for animals. Open flames in jack-o’-lanterns pose fire and burn risks if knocked over by pets, making battery-operated candles a safer alternative. Decorative items such as pumpkins and corn are relatively non-toxic but can still cause stomach upset if eaten, while electrical cords should be kept out of animals’ reach.

To protect pets from crowd noise and door-to-door visitors, owners can keep animals in a quiet, secure room furnished with familiar bedding, toys and water. Setting up a candy station on the driveway can limit doorbell disruptions at the front door. Owners are also advised to walk dogs earlier in the day to avoid trick-or-treating crowds, maintain updated microchips and identification tags and consult a veterinarian ahead of time if an animal experiences severe anxiety.
