SCRANTON, Pa. \u2014 A new sign sits in the window of the community building at Nay Aug Park in Scranton. It reads ‘No e-bikes or other e-vehicles’ in bold red letters.<\/p>\n
“They’re concerned about their safety. They’re concerned about the rider’s safety,” said Barb O’Malley, Scranton Municipal Recreation Authority Board.<\/p>\n

She says for months her own personal experiences and reports from parkgoers about e-bikes and scooters dangerously passing through roadways and walking paths have left board members no choice but to enforce a rule that aims to keep everyone safe.<\/p>\n
“It was really a problem, particularly in the summer because with our new courts with the and the swimming pool we’ve had a lot more traffic, vehicular traffic, pedestrian traffic coming through Nay Aug, and we were very concerned about the safety of the patrons of the park,” O’Malley said.<\/p>\n
“First of all, I think they’re very dangerous. I mean, uh, like I said, I do have my own personal experience. My grandson has one, and he was only 14, and he was in a little bit of an accident. I think he was going a little bit too fast,” said Angela Troianiello, Scranton.<\/p>\n

They both agree that most of the time riders haphazardly weave through foot traffic and go way too fast. “There’s a lot of adults that ride them as well, and I mean, they go at least 35 miles an hour, so they’re pretty fast, well, speaking of,” said John as an e-bike rode by.<\/p>\n
While not everyone appears to know about the new ban, park officials say those caught violating the policy will be reported to the police, and further action will be taken if necessary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Officials hope the change will keep walkers and riders safe.
