Herr\u2019s is back for a fifth edition of its Philly flavor fan vote, and 2026\u2019s chips \u2014 like pretty much everything next year \u2014 is all about America\u2019s 250th birthday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The \u201cFlavored by Philly: Taste of 250\u201d<\/a> will ask local fans of the Chester County company to choose three potato chip flavors that best celebrate \u201cfreedom, liberty and unity,\u201d from nine curated concept flavors, with the popular vote winner for each of the three theme words going on store shelves for the summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis special edition of \u2018Flavored by Philly\u2019 pays tribute to the bold, authentic spirit that has always defined America\u2019s birthplace,\u201d the company said in a statement. \u201cEach flavor concept \u2026 represents an idea that helped shape the American story. Now, Herr\u2019s is asking: What do those ideas taste like to you?\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s that? You\u2019ve never deeply considered what freedom, liberty or unity taste like? You\u2019re probably not alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Luckily, the folks at Herr\u2019s have curated three potato chip flavors for each category. They assigned barbecue flavors to \u201cliberty,\u201d cheesy flavors to \u201cfreedom,\u201d and spicy flavors for \u201cunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Again, don\u2019t overthink it. Herr\u2019s executive chairman, Ed Herr, said the categories are mainly about enjoying the flavors and feelings of the semiquincentennial celebrations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s really not necessarily a correlation with the flavor and the word as much as there is just people enjoying snacks and thinking about the fact that \u2014 whether we\u2019re having a cookout or something like that \u2014 we\u2019re celebrating our freedom, our liberty, our unity with this 250-year celebration,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The liberty category is seeking out the people\u2019s barbecue choice between \u201cLiberty Roasted Garlic BBQ,\u201d \u201cLiberty Hickory BBQ\u201d and \u201cLiberty Hot Honey BBQ.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vying for the freedom category are cheesy flavors of \u201cFreedom Loaded Cheese Fries,\u201d \u201cFreedom Cheesy Crab Dip\u201d and \u201cFreedom Cheesy Bread.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

For unity, voters will pick from \u201cUnited Jalapeno Cream Cheese,\u201d \u201cUnited Lemon Pepper\u201d and \u201cUnited Mango Habanero.\u201d<\/p>\n

Voting opened this morning<\/a> and will run until Dec. 10. The three winning chip flavors will go on the shelves for a limited run starting next June. Herr said that the packaging will have a patriotic Philadelphia look to it.<\/p>\n

The inaugural edition of the \u201cFlavored by Philly\u201d competition in 2022 pitted three fan-created Philly flavors against each other, with \u201cLong Hots and Sharp Provolone\u201d<\/a> winning the popular vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The next two years produced flavors paying homage to local spots suggested by fans. \u201cTomato Pie\u201d flavor, inspired by Corropolese Bakery<\/a> in Montgomery County, and the \u201cSpecial Hot Stromboli\u201d chip based on Romano\u2019s original sandwich<\/a> in Essington prevailed in the last two years, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Year 4 was a \u201cCrunch Off\u201d of the first three champions, in which \u201cLong Hots and Sharp Provolone\u201d emerged as the \u201cCrunch Off\u201d champion<\/a> and will enter Herr\u2019s permanent lineup starting in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Voting in the competition grew more than sixfold between years 3 and 4. More importantly, the taste testers at WHYY\u2019s office have maintained a perfect streak of predicting the winner<\/a> in every year the competition has run.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s 2026 plans also include working in partnership with the Philadelphia Phillies, who will be hosting the MLB All-Star festivities in July<\/a>. Herr said that the company may hold a \u201cFreedom Fest\u201d for its local community in Nottingham, Pa., too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Herr\u2019s celebration of the people of Philadelphia will be through the \u201cFlavored by Philly\u201d competition.<\/p>\n
