Undeterred, Mac\u00eado crafted drums out of buckets and cans taken from the trash in his mother\u2019s kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always see the real drums, and always think about, \u2018Wow someday,\u2019\u201d he said, holding back tears before composing himself, \u201cI\u2019m gonna have this drum someday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mac\u00eado\u2019s dreams became a reality when, as a teenager, he played the timbao drums as part of the renowned Timbalada band, with whom he recorded eight albums. He later moved to the United States, where he currently leads a band and performs internationally.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis guy never had an opportunity to learn music at school, but he\u2019s the leader. It blows your mind,\u201d said Fl\u00e1vio Oliveira, who met Mac\u00eado more than 20 years ago.<\/p>\n

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Oliveira sought Mac\u00eado to learn how to play rhythms from Bahia.<\/p>\n

Mac\u00eado, no longer a member of Timbalada, was struggling to make ends meet and didn\u2019t own an instrument. Impressed by Mac\u00eado\u2019s raw talent and musicality, Oliveira raised money to help the percussionist move to the United States, and get on his feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe can hear stuff that normal people would not be able to hear,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Today, Mac\u00eado plays joyous Afro-Brazilian music and latin rhythms with Dend\u00ea & Band. The six-person group, influenced by samba de roda, Candombl\u00e9 and other Bahia traditions, have performed all over the world.
