EASTON, Pa. – In Northampton County, it’s construction day for a holiday staple.<\/p>\n
The Easton Peace Candle has been assembled in Centre Square.<\/p>\n
Local workers said they had a goal to build the 106-foot tall makeshift candle before noon on Thursday because of strong winds, and they succeeded.<\/p>\n

For many of them, the construction goes beyond work.<\/p>\n
It’s a holiday tradition.<\/p>\n
69 News Reporter Cierra Genelle got to chat with Local 11 Ironworkers on site.<\/p>\n
Climbing atop the Easton Peace Candle makes for a view like no other for Schaffer.<\/p>\n
“It’s better. It’s quieter,” explained Brett Schaffer, Local 11 Union Ironwoker.<\/p>\n
In fact, he’s done it so many times, he’s lost count.<\/p>\n
“I wish I could scroll through the pictures and find out or some old newsprints,” said Schaffer.<\/p>\n
For more than two decades, he, Local 11 Union Ironworker Organizer Joe Colucci and their crew have assembled the holiday staple in Centre Square.<\/p>\n
“Wait until you meet these guys. They’re superstars,” said Colucci. “We do it free of charge. We volunteer, and we’re proud to do it.”<\/p>\n
Helping them with the project is Easton native Mike Rogers.<\/p>\n
“[I] came here and I always saw this thing. I didn’t know who put it up, but now I do,” said Rogers, a Local 11 Ironworker.<\/p>\n
“Is this your first time assembling the Peace Candle?” asked 69 News Reporter Cierra Genelle.<\/p>\n
“It is my first time. Won’t be my last, you know, but I had a good time,” said Rogers.<\/p>\n
“No fear of heights?” Genelle asked.<\/p>\n
“No, no, just scared to fall,” Rogers said.<\/p>\n
Applauding their efforts is Easton Councilman Frank Pintabone, who said the candle lights up the winter magic across the city.<\/p>\n
“It started in 1951 during the Korean War. It’s a call for peace,” said Pintabone. “We’ve done it every year since. So, this is Easton’s history. “<\/p>\n
