WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013\u00a0Following a\u00a0G7\u00a0meeting,\u00a0the\u00a0US\u00a0State\u00a0Department\u00a0said they\u00a0are working to bolster our supply chains and economy with new critical\u00a0minerals\u00a0deals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Many countries, including the\u00a0US, rely heavily on\u00a0China\u00a0for a range of minerals like rare earth magnets to battery metals.\u00a0At a recent\u00a0Group of\u00a0Seven, better known as\u00a0G7,\u00a0meeting\u00a0in\u00a0Canada.\u00a0The State Department said there was\u00a0a huge focus on critical minerals\u00a0and supply chains.\u00a0Tommy Pigott, the principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, said they made it a key priority to\u00a0improve supply chains to make us more independent\u00a0by securing these deals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
We asked\u00a0Pigott\u00a0if this is one way to counter\u00a0China.\u00a0In part, Pigott replied it\u2019s\u00a0about building our economy and\u00a0boosting\u00a0national security.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0be any\u00a0country\u00a0we rely\u00a0on\u00a080\u00a0or 90 percent of a certain critical mineral for that country\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0producing\u00a0or\u00a0processing,\u201d said Pigott.\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0have that. So,\u00a0the\u00a0President is\u00a0very clear\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0having a re-industrialization of the\u00a0American\u00a0economy which will directly\u00a0benefit\u00a0the\u00a0American\u00a0worker.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The\u00a0US\u00a0and\u00a0China began a trade war earlier in the year.
